Jon Georg Balke (born 7 June 1955) is a Norwegian jazz pianist who plays with the Magnetic North Orchestra.

He is Erik Balke's younger brother.

Career

Balke began playing classical piano but moved to blues at 12, but he also performs in various genres. He joined Arild Andersen's quartet at the age of 18. He began working on his own in the mid-1980s and would become one of Norway's best jazz composers. He was active in the Radka Toneff and E'olén groups before joining Oslo 13 and Masqualero in the early 1980s. From 1989 to Vossajazz 1992, he concentrated on his own projects, including JKleBa (with Audun Kleive and Per Jrgensen) and the Magnetic North Orchestra, for which he commissioned Il Cenoneat and Per Jrgensen.

Balke formed Batagraf in 2002 and created the concept work Siwan with singer Amina Alaoui in 2007. He is also the promoter of a series of multimedia concerts at Vossajazz's Ekstremjazz festival, which has been called Ekstremjazz. The concerts feature many specialists of extreme sports, including parachuting, paragliding, hanggliding, and BMX biking. In 2012, he was an artist in residence at Moldejazz. In 2016, he began Warp, a solo piano piece that used live electronics accompanying the grand piano.
