Johnny Russell Career

Club career

Russell, who appeared just five times on Dundee United's under-19 side in 2006–07, made his professional debut in the Scottish Premier League on May 12, 2007 against Falkirk, who had been drafted as an 80th-minute replacement for Steven Robb.

Russell started on loan to Forfar Athletic of the Scottish Football League Third Division in August 2008, scoring twice on his debut. Russell made his first appearance for Dundee United in the Scottish Cup fourth round victory over East Stirlingshire in January 2009, scoring a second-half penalty kick for his first United goal. Russell returned to Forfar on loan for the remainder of the season, signing a deal extension with United in April until May 2012.

Russell played and scored in Dundee United's League Cup victory over Ross County in September 2009 before commencing a month of loan with Raith Rovers in the Scottish Football League First Division, which was then extended until Boxing Day. Russell spent the remainder of the season in Kirkcaldy, winning by a margin of 4–1 over Ross County.

Russell scored a header for Dundee United's second goal in a 3–2 victory at Ibrox, in which David Goodwillie scored the winner in the 89th minute. He scored for United in the 2011–12 Europa League, his second in a 3–2 second leg victory over Poland's lsk Wrocaw. United had lost the first leg 1–0 and were therefore disqualified under the away goals rule. He scored against Celtic earlier this season and then stayed in the United team.

Russell scored a hat-trick in a 6–2 Scottish Cup victory over Airdrie United on January 7, 2012. He was his second of his career. Russell had scored a total of 9 goals in the 2011-12 season, making him a regular in the starting lineup alongside Jon Daly.

Russell had his first SPL hattrick in a 3–2 victory over Kilmarnock on January 19, 2013. Russell scored after 14 seconds in a 3–0 Scottish Cup victory over Rangers on 2 February, equaling Finn D's record for the fastest ever Dundee United goal.

Russell's agent confirmed that offers for him had been made by Italian Serie A and English Championship side Derby County, with Dundee United keen to have Russell leave with a year remaining on his deal after his agent stated that Russell will not be signing a new one. Derby County had an offer for the striker as of June 2013.

Russell joined Derby County on June 10 for about £750,000, but he committed to a four-year deal. On his debut in an Irish friendly against Bohemians, he scored twice. Chris Martin, Conor Sammon, and Jamie Ward were among Russell's candidates for a starting position. Russell scored on his debut from the penalty spot in Derby's 1–1 draw with Blackburn Rovers on August 4th. In the Bass Charity Vase final against Burton Albion, he scored his fifth in four friendlies, losing 3–2. Russell fractured his left fibula during the game and was barred from action for six weeks.

Russell signed with Sporting Kansas City, a three-year deal, on January 31, 2018. In the first game of their 2018 MLS season, he made his debut for Sporting, defeating New York City FC 2–0 on March 4th. Russell's solo goal against Los Angeles Galaxy earned him the MLS Goal of the Week award. In a 6–0 victory over the Vancouver Whitecaps on April 20, Russell earned him the MLS Player of the week award.

Russell was named captain in March 2021 after Matt Besler departed the club in March 2021. Russell was named MLS Player of the Week for Week 33 of the 2021 season on October 28, 2021, in honor of his brace against the Los Angeles Galaxy in a 2-0 victory. Russell scored 15 goals in the 2021 regular season, making him the highest-scoring Scottish-born player in MLS history.

International career

Russell made his Scotland under-19s debut in August 2007. In ten appearances for the under-19s, he scored two goals in ten appearances. Russell played 11 times for the Scotland under-21s, scoring once in the process. He was given his first call up to the full national team for the match against the United States in May 2012, but did not participate. Russell made his international debut in November 2014, defeating England 3–1 in a 3–1 friendly home loss. Russell helped Andrew Robertson make it 2–1.

He was uncapped since October 2015 and was recalled to the Scotland squad in May 2018 for friendlies against Peru and Mexico. In UEFA Euro 2020 qualifiers, he scored his first international goal on March 24th to lift San Marino 2–0 away. Russell was unable to play for Scotland in 2020 because COVID-19 protocols made it impractical for him to travel between North America and Europe for international matches.
