John McCallum Life

John Neil McCallum (14 March 1918 – 3 February 2010), an Australian theatre and film actor who was wildly popular in the United Kingdom.

He was also a television producer.

Early life

John Neil McCallum Sr., McCallum's father, was a theatre developer and entrepreneur who designed and operated the 2,000-seat Cremorne Theatre on the banks of the Brisbane River for many years. McCallum Snr. was emigrating from Scotland. She became a natural performer and was soon active in Brisbane's entertainment scene. His mother, a born in England, was an excellent amateur actor.

McCallum Jr. was born in Brisbane in 1918 during a comedy performance's first night. A family friend of his father sent him a wire: 'Congratulations on two howling triumphs', after his birth.'

McCallum was introduced to acting at an early age: his childhood was full of backstage experiences at the Cremorne Theatre with a diverse cast cast member. Although McCallum and his two younger brothers received their primary school education in the United Kingdom, the family returned to Australia as the Great Depression began. His secondary education was at the Anglican Church Grammar School in Brisbane.

He began his theatrical training with Barbara Sisely of the Brisbane Repertory Company.
