John Heard Life

John Heard Jr. (March 7, 1946 – July 21, 2017) was an American film and television actor.

He appeared in many films, including Deceived, Chilly Scenes of Winter, Heart Beat, Cutter's Way, Cat People, and C.H.U.D., as well as supporting roles in After Hours, Big, Beaches, My Fellow Americans, Snake Eyes, and Animal Factory.

In Home Alone and its sequel Home Alone 2: Lost in New York, Peter McCallister, the father of protagonist Kevin McCallister (Macaulay Culkin) appeared, as well as George in Sharknado.

In 1999, Heard was nominated for an Emmy Award for guest appearance on The Sopranos.

Early life and education

Heard was born in Washington, D.C., on March 7, 1946. He was the son of Helen (Sperling), who worked in the arts and appeared in community theatre, and John Henry Heard, who worked for the Secretary of Defense's office. Heard was raised as a Catholic.

Heard attended Gonzaga College High School, Clark University in Worcester, Massachusetts, and Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. He grew up with two sisters, one of whom, Cordis, is also an actor, and a brother, Matthew, who died in 2017.

Personal life

Heard married actress Margot Kidder in 1979, but they separated after just six days.

John Matthew Heard, he had a son John Matthew Heard in 1987 with actress and former girlfriend Melissa Leo. Heard was arrested in 1991 and charged with third-degree assault for reportedly slapping Leo. He was found guilty of trespassing at Leo's home in 1997, but was cleared of charges of trespassing at their son's kindergarten.

He also married Sharon Heard. Annika Rose and Maxwell John were their two children.

Heard married Lana Pritchard in Los Angeles on May 24, 2010. The couple divorced seven months later.

Maxwell, his defunct son, died on December 6, 2016, at the age of 22.

Acting career

Heard appeared on stage and film in the 1970s and 1980s. He appeared off-Broadway in Mark Medoff's The Wager, and in 1975 as Guildenstern in Hamlet at the Delacorte Theatre in Central Park, where he also understudied Sam Waterston as Hamlet. The production migrated to the Vivian Beaumont Theater at Lincoln Center in the fall. In 1977, Heard appeared at the Eugene O'Neill Theater Center in a series of new plays. Heard received Obie Awards for his appearances in Othello and Split in 1979-80. He was the male lead in the 1979 film Head Over Heels (which was renamed and re-released as Chilly Scenes of Winter in 1982).

Alex Cutter appeared in the film Cutter's Way in 1981. In 1982, he played Nastassja Kinski, one of the main characters in the remake of Cat People. In C.H.U.D., he co-starred as photographer George Cooper. (Cannibal Humanoid Underground Dwellers, 1984) with future Home Alone co-star Daniel Stern and The Trip to Bountiful (1985). Heard played a monk named Brother Timothy in the comedy-drama film Heaven Help Us (aka: Catholic Boys, 1985). Heard, who appeared in After Hours (also 1985), was bartender Tom Schorr.

He appeared in The Milagro Beanfield War and had a large role in Big's adult corporate competitor and jilted boyfriend, Elizabeth Perkins (both 1988). In Beaches, he co-starred with Bette Midler (also 1988). Heard appeared in Mindwalk (1990), a film in which three characters from various socioeconomic and poetical backgrounds voiced their views on the human experience, and he appeared in Awakenings (1991), with Robert De Niro and Robin Williams, playing Jack Saunders, and he appeared in Gladiator (1992), with Cuba Gooding Jr.

In the film Radio Flyer (1992) and FBI agent Gavin Vereek in The Pelican Brief (1993), he played Daugherty. In 1997's One Eight Seven, he appeared with Samuel L. Jackson and was included in the 2000 miniseries Perfect Murder, Perfect Town.

Heard appeared in Home Alone in 1990 as Peter McCallister. When traveling to France for Christmas, he played Kevin's father, who mistakenly left his son at home. Heard portrayed the role with a mixture of bemused dramatic portrayal of a father's father's absence as well as more classic comedic tropes. Heard recalled McCallister in the sequel Home Alone 2: Lost in New York, making it one of the best hits of 1990, and the film was one of the most popular hits of the 1990s.

Arthur Dimmesdale appeared in a television version of The Scarlet Letter (1979) as Heard. In the ABC miniseries adaptation of Shirley MacLaine's Out on a Limb, a memoir of her spiritual and extraterrestrial experiences, he played real-life Ku Klux Klan leader D. C. Stephenson (1989) and appeared alongside David Manning in the ABC miniseries version of Out on a Limb. Heard appeared on The Sopranos as the struggling corrupt detective for which he received an Emmy Award as well as Finn Detrolio, one of Meadows' children, and later on Battlestar Galactica as Commander Barry Garner.

On CSI: Miami (as Kenwall Duquesne's father, Calleigh Duquesne) and Prison Break (as Frank Tancredi, governor of Illinois, and father of Sara Tancredi) he appeared regularly. He appeared on two episodes of Fox television's The Chicago Code in 2000 and 2010.

When Heard was asked about his work in 2008, he replied, 'I'm sure he replied'.
