Joey Santiago Life

Joseph Alberto "Joey" Santiago (born June 10, 1965) is a Filipino-American guitarist and composer.

Santiago has been active since 1986, and he is best known as the lead guitarist for the American alternative rock band the Pixies.

Santiago made musical scores for film and television documentaries after the band's breakup in 1993, and he and his ex-wife, Linda Mallari, founded The Martinis.

He also contributed to Charles Douglas's and ex Pixies bandmate Frank Black's albums.

As the Pixies' lead guitarist when they reunited in 2004, Santiago reprised his position as the Pixies' lead guitarist. Santiago has described his guitar technique as "angular and bent," and he cites Les Paul, George Harrison, Chet Atkins, Wes Montgomery, Joe Pass, and Jimi Hendrix as key influences on his style.

Critics also praised his guitar's performance in the Pixies' monstrous presence, as part of the Pixies' sound: MTV's Laurel Bowman said Santiago's "sonic plow was the defining feature of the Pixies' monstrous presence."

Early life and education

Santiago was born in Manila, Philippines, on June 10, 1965, third of six sons of an anesthesiologist. The family immigrated to the United States in 1972, when President Marcos declared martial law. The family moved to Longmeadow, Massachusetts, where Santiago attended Longmeadow High School and graduated from Wilbraham & Monson Academy in 1983. He had his first encounter with a musical instrument at the age of eight, but he never took it seriously because he had to share it with five brothers. Santiago first played a guitar at the age of nine after he discovered a classical guitar hanging on his oldest brother's wall for decoration. "Rock and Roll" was his first instrument he learned to play.

Santiago, a teen, became interested in computer programming, naming his first "Iggy" and his second "Pop" after punk rocker Iggy Pop. He was riding his bike through the United States in aid of charity, but after finishing, it didn't bother to request the sponsor's money.

Santiago debuted at the University of Massachusetts Amherst in 1983 after graduating from high school. He stayed unemployed for as long as the university would allow him to, but eventually moved to economics. After hearing Thompson and his roommate playing their guitars, he met Charles Thompson, an anthropology undergraduate and the future Pixies frontman. Santiago rushed home to retrieve his guitar and was soon playing "non-blues-scale, non-cover-song rock" with Thompson.

At the start of the second semester, Santiago and Thompson shared a room. Santiago soon introduced his new roommate to 1970s punk and David Bowie's music. "Charles and I had a suite at the college dorm when we were together in college," he later recalled. We'd be able to see black flags and terror. I think we just liked each other at the beginning. I did know right away that he was playing music... "I'd write [the songs] and I'd throw my ideas on the guitar." Thompson, a second-year college freshman, went to Puerto Rico as an exchange student. Thompson wrote to Santiago, "We gotta do it, Joe, we gotta pursue our aspirations," Thompson replied, saying "now is the time." Thompson said in response to this letter that he returned to Amherst to form a rock band with Santiago.

Personal life

Santiago was married to Linda Mallari, with whom he has two children. They have since divorced. He lives in Los Angeles. Santiago started in 2016 with a rehabilitation center to address his alcohol and opioid problems. Since being sober, he's now sober.
