Joel Embiid Career

College career

Embiid spent one year at the University of Kansas. He was chosen one of the top 30 finalists for the Naismith College Player of the Year on February 13, 2014, according to the publication. He played 28 games between 2013 and 2014, averaging 11.2 points, 8.1 rebounds, 1.4 assists, and 2.6 blocks per game. In six games, he had scored over 15 points in seven games and five blocks. He later received Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year awards and was named second-team All-Big 12 in his second year.

In March 2014, the embiid suffered a stress fracture in his back. He missed out on the Big 12 tournament and NCAA tournament last year. Kansas was disqualified in the second round of the NCAA Tournament (Round of 32).

Professional career

Emiid declared for the 2014 NBA draft on September 9, 2014, ending his three-year participation in college. He underwent surgery on a broken navicular bone in his right foot on June 20, 2014, and was later found out for four to six months. He was named with the third overall pick by the Philadelphia 76ers six days later. Since Ruben Boumtje-Boumtje and Luc Mbah a Moute, as well as Cameroon's top pick, he was ranked third.

Embiid's rookie scale deal with the 76ers began on August 26, 2014. Due to the fractured navicular bone in his foot, he was not able to play at all in the 2014–15 season. Embarg was setback in his recovery after a CT scan revealed less recovery than anticipated after missing the entire 2014–15 season. Following a second round of surgery on his right foot on August 18, it was later determined that Embiid's chances of playing in the 2015–16 season were slim. He missed the entire 2015–16 season.

In the 76ers' first preseason game against the Boston Celtics on October 4, 2016, Embiid began at center. In his first game, he scored six points, four rebounds, and two blocks in 13 minutes, en route to a 92-89 victory. Embiid made his long-awaited NBA regular-season debut against the Oklahoma City Thunder on October 26, 2016. In a 103-97 loss, he scored 20 points, seven rebounds, and two blocks in 25 minutes as the starting center. In a 103–101 loss to the Orlando Magic on November 1st, he scored his first double-double with 18 points and ten rebounds. The 76ers won their first victory of the season on November 11th after defeating the Indiana Pacers 109-105. In a 120-105 victory over the Phoenix Suns on 19 November, he scored a career-high 26 points in 20 minutes. He was named Eastern Conference Rookie of the Month for games played in October and November on December 1st. In a 108–107 victory over the Brooklyn Nets on December 18, he set a new career record by scoring 33 points. He was named Eastern Conference Rookie of the Month for December games.

In a 98-97 victory over the New York Knicks, Embiid posted a career-high 14 rebounds on January 11, 2017. He was named Eastern Conference Player of the Week for games played Monday, January 16th to Sunday, January 22nd. He was drafted into the 2017 Rising Stars Challenge two days later. On February 2, 2017, he was named Eastern Conference Rookie of the Month for January games, as well as being named a Taco Bell Skills Challenge participant. It was revealed on February 11, 2017, that Embiid had a torn meniscus in his left knee, but that surgery would not be required. Embiid was ruled out of the All-Star Weekend festivities as a result of the injury. Since initially ruling him out indefinitely due to swelling in his left knee, the 76ers released a statement two days later announcing that Emiid will miss the remainder of the 2016-2017 season. An MRI on his left knee revealed that the area affected by the bone bruise had increased considerably, although the previously reported meniscus tear was more apparent. He underwent minor arthroscopic surgery on March 24 to fix the meniscus tear in his left knee. He was named to the NBA All-Rookie First Team at the end of the season.

Embiid signed a five-year, $148 million guaranteed rookie scale maximum contract extension with the 76ers on October 10, 2017, with the possibility of receiving an additional $30 million if he earns an All-NBA first-, second-, or third-team pick or is named MVP in 2017–18. Emiid had 18 points and 13 rebounds in his 76ers' season opener against the Washington Wizards on October 18th, a 120-115 loss. In a 97-86 victory over the Detroit Pistons, he scored 30 points five days later. In a 115–107 victory over the Houston Rockets on Sunday, he had 22 points, nine rebounds, five assists, and two steals in 25 minutes, becoming the third player to reach such highs in 25 minutes of play or less since 1983–84. Embiid scored a career-high 46 points, the most by a Philadelphia player in 11 years, on November 15, a 115-109 victory over the Los Angeles Lakers. Embiid had seven assists and seven blocked shots, making him the first NBA player to score 40 points, seven assists, and seven blocks in a game against the Pistons since Julius Erving. Embiid fired 14 for 20 on the field and 16 of 19 at the free throw line, giving him the most points by a Sixers player since Allen Iverson scored 46 against the Chicago Bulls in 2006. In addition,, Iverson was the first 35 times anyone scored at least 44 for the 76ers.

He was selected as an All-Star starter for the 2018 NBA All-Star Game, becoming the first Philadelphia player selected as an All-Star starter since Allen Iverson in the 2009–10 season and the first Sixers All-Star since Jrue Holiday in 2013. In an 89-80 victory over the Boston Celtics, he scored 26 points and tied a career record with 16 rebounds. He was then named Eastern Conference Player of the Week for games played between Monday, January 15th, and Sunday, January 21st. In a 112-98 victory over the Los Angeles Clippers, he had 29 points and tied a career high with 16 rebounds. He scored 29 points in a 118–110 victory over the New York Knicks on March 15, becoming the first Sixers player to score more than 40 20-point performances in a season since Andre Iodala's 2007–08. In a 120–116 victory over the Brooklyn Nets on his 24th birthday, Embiid had 24 points and a career-high 19 rebounds. Embiid suffered an orbital fracture of his left eye against the Knicks on March 28th. He underwent surgery three days later, with a return date of two weeks being the most likely result.

Embiid made his playoff debut in Game 3 on April 19th after missing the first two games of the 76ers' first-round playoff series against the Miami Heat due to a left eye injury. With a 128-108 victory over his 23 points, he helped the 76ers take a 2–1 lead in the series. Emeid was a key player for the 76ers' 4–1 loss to the Heat as he contributed 19 points and 12 rebounds in a 104-91 victory. Embiid accounted for 31 points and 13 rebounds in Game 1 of the 76ers' second-round series against the Celtics, defeating 117-101. In a 114–112 loss in Game 5, the 76ers went on to lose to the Celtics in five games, with Embiid scoring 27 points and 12 rebounds. After Game 5, Embiid said in his postgame press conference that he felt he shouldn't have been called on his potential game-tying layup attempt with under 20 seconds remaining. A foul may have been called on the play, according to the NBA later.

In a 106-89 victory over the Pacers on March 10, he returned from an eight-game absence with a sore left knee and 12 rebounds. In a 130-125 win over the Bucks on Saturday, he had 40 points and 15 rebounds. In a 118-115 victory over the Boston Celtics on March 20, Embiid scored 37 points and had a career-high 22 rebounds. In a 123-110 victory over the Brooklyn Nets on March 28, he had 39 points, 13 rebounds, and six assists. In a 128-122 loss to the Bucks on April 4, he returned from a three-game absence with 34 points, 13 rebounds, 13 assists, and three blocks. Wilt Chamberlain became the only other big man in team history with multiple triple-doubles in the same season. Following the All-Star break, Emiid ended the season playing 14 games, five of which were canceled, including five of the final seven games due to exhaustion and injury. Embiid had 31 points, 16 rebounds, 7 assists, and 6 blocks in a 112–108 victory over the Nets in Game 4 of the 76ers' first-round playoff series against the Nets. During the second round of the playoffs, the Sixers lost in seven games to the Toronto Raptors due to illness and flu-like signs.

Embiid was suspended for two games without compensation after an altercation with Karl-Anthony Towns during a game against the Minnesota Timberwolves on October 31. Embiid had a game-high 13 rebounds but lost a game to the Toronto Raptors in the 76ers' 101-96 loss to the Toronto Raptors on November 25. Philadelphia defeated the Brooklyn Nets 112–104 on Tuesday 20 February 20, 2020, with Embiid's then-season-high 39 points and 16 rebounds. Wilt Chamberlain was the first Sixers player to score a triple-double since 1968. In a 123-120 victory over the Milwaukee Bucks, Embiid had 42 points, 14 rebounds, and five assists. In a 133–120 victory over the Indiana Pacers on Monday, Embiid had 41 points, a season-high 20 rebounds, four assists, and two steals on 14-of-17 shooting from the field on April 9th. Since the introduction of shot clock in 1954-55, Embiid became the fifth NBA player to score at least 40 points and 20 rebounds while shooting 80 percent or better from the field, alongside former NBA All-Star John Drew and Hall of Famers Charles Barkley, Wilt Chamberlain, and Bob Pettit. Embiid was named the NBA scoring champion in 2000, becoming the first center to do so since Shaquille O'Neal in 2000, and also the first center to average over 30 points per game since Moses Malone in 1982. Embiid was also the first international player to win a NBA scoring title and the first Sixer to lead the league in scoring after Allen Iverson captured the title for the fourth and final time in 2005.

Embiid defeated the Toronto Raptors 112-97 on Sunday, posting a double-double of 31 points and 11 rebounds in Game 2 of the first round of the playoffs. Embiid scored a game-winning three-pointer against the Raptors in overtime on April 20 during Game 3 of the first round. He had 33 points and 13 rebounds in the game. Embiid sustained his thumb and was relegated to a soft cast for the second half of the game and the following Friday session. It was announced that he was suffering "pain and pain" after the game. Embiid was through the pain in Game 4 and scored 21 points and eight rebounds, but the 76ers lost 110–102 to the Toronto Raptors in a 110-102 loss. Embiid will require surgery on the thumb, but that the operation will be postponed until the end of the 76ers' season. Embiid had 33 points, ten rebounds, and three blocks to lead the 76ers to a 132-97 victory in Game 6, putting an end to their first round match. The Sixers announced on the next day that Embiid had suffered a minor concussion and a right orbital fracture, and that he will be out indefinitely. In Game 6, power forward Pascal Siakam collided while driving to the basketball net, causing the injury. Because of the injury, Embiid missed the first two games of the Eastern Conference Semifinals, where Philadelphia will go on to lose in six games to Miami.

Emiid underwent right thumb surgery and a left index finger repair on May 30, and his left index finger was sliced off.

National team career

The embiid is eligible to compete for the Cameroon national basketball team. Embiid was selected to participate in the 2017 FIBA Afrobasket in the Republic of Congo, with the group qualifier taking place in March during the NBA regular season. Luc Mbah a Moute, a fellow Cameroon-born NBA player, has expressed his opinion on Emiid, representing his country, saying, "It would be fantastic for our team, our country, and Joel" — "It would be great for our team, our country, and Joel." At AfroBasket 2017, the embiid did not compete for Cameroon.

The Embiid was granted citizenship by France in July 2022 as "a foreigner [...] whose naturalization is of special importance." Later in September, he became a resident of the United States.

Joel Embiid suffered another knee injury scare after landing awkwardly following a spectacular dunk against the New York Knicks on Saturday night. Embiid went back to the locker room with just under three minutes left in the second quarter of the Philadelphia 76ers' first round playoff game at Madison Square Garden. He went up for a monstrous dunk off the backboard but landed awkwardly on the way down.
