Early life

Jo Dee Marie Messina was born in Framingham, Massachusetts, on August 25, 1970, to Vincent and Mary Messina. Her father, who is of Italian descent and mother of Irish descent, raised her in Holliston, Massachusetts, alongside sisters Terese and Marianne and Vincent. Messina's passion for music began early in childhood. Patsy Cline, Reba McEntire, and The Judds all had influence on her. She was playing local clubs and performing, while her brother and sister provided back up on drums and guitar by age 16. The group continued to perform until Jo Dee graduated from high school.

Messina, who knew that living in the Northeast would reduce her chances of achieving country music stardom, moved to Nashville, Tennessee, at the age 19. When competing in talent competitions around Nashville, she competed in various temporary careers, including computer programming and accounting.

One win resulted in a regular appearance on the radio show Live at Libby's, which captured producer Byron Gallimore's curiosity and helped her to compile a demonstration tape. Gallimore was also working with young Tim McGraw at the same time, and Messina befriended him. McGraw jokingly claimed that they needed a redhead backstage at one of his shows. Messina was signed to the record label shortly after with the support of fellow Curb producer James Stroud. Gallimore and McGraw joined Messina's studio albums for Curb later.

Personal life

Messina became involved in the Special Olympics after stumbled over an event while jogging. She has been a diplomat and appears at Special Olympics events in order to raise attendance.

Noah Roger Deffenbaugh, his son, was born on January 19, 2009. Jonah Christopher Deffenbaugh, their second son, was born on January 11, 2012.

Messina debuted her self-titled debut album in 1996. It resulted in two top ten hits, beginning with the lead single, "Heads Carolina, Tails California," which debuted at number two on the country charts, and its sequel, "You're Not in Kansas Anymore," which gained similar success. However, "Do You Want to Make Something of It" and "He'd Never Seen Julie Cry" were two additional singles from the album's top 40 and became minor hits between 1996 and 1997. Messina appeared in 215 shows in 1996 and became one of the country's most popular young female vocalists of the 1990s. The RIAA awarded her debut album gold over 500,000 copies and was rated gold by the Royal Academy of British Architects.

Messina's finances suffered as a result of a string of poor corporate decisions and a change of leadership that resulted in her almost declaring bankruptcy; she almost lost her home and her car; She spent almost a year trying to produce new songs and content for a new album that may have a chance to keep her from bankruptcy. With giving her a "second shot," she credited "Bye, Bye" and "I'm Alright" on radio, she praised her "second chance."

I'm Alright, Messina's second album, was released in 1998. "Bye, Bye"; "I'm Alright"; and "Stand Beside Me" were three hits on the Billboard Country Chart this year, as well as "Bye, Bye"; "I'm Alright"; and "Stand Beside Me," all three of which debuted on the Billboard Hot 100. "Lesson in Leavin," Dottie West's fourth single, was a recreation of the 1980 number-one country's number one hit. For seven weeks, the song topped the charts at number one. "Because You Love Me," her second top-ten hit from the album, debuted at number eight on the Billboard Country Chart in 1999.

Messina received the Country Music Association's Horizon Award in 2000, which is given to young country music artists. She has also been named on "Most Played Female at Country Radio" by Billboard and has received three major awards from the Boston Music Awards, which are based in Massachusetts.

Messina's album became the country's most best-selling album to date, with over two million copies selling in the United States, receiving an RIAA certificate of double platinum. Burn, her third studio album, targeted at country pop-styled music, was released in 2000. "That's the Way" was the album's top-charting single on the Billboard Country Chart and also became the top-charting single on the Billboard Hot 100, peaking at number 25. She had two more top-10 hits with "Burn" and "Downtime" after that success.

Messina's first holiday album, A Joyful Noise, debuted in 2002. In 2003, the title track was unveiled as a single and peaked at number 16 on the adult contemporary charts. The album was made up of remakes of well-known holiday songs. Messina had intended to release a new album in 2003, but instead, a Greatest Hits album was released due to delays. The album featured the majority of Messina's hits from 1996 to 2003, as well as four new songs, two of which were not available as singles. The first, "Was That My Life," reached the top 25 and "I Wish," the second, a top-five hit, became a top-five hit. The album was also awarded gold by the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIAA).

It was her fourth album to be awarded an RIAA gold medal. "My Give a Damn's Busted" (co-written by country music star Joe Diffie) debuted at number one on the Billboard Country Chart and became Messina's first number-one single since 2001. The three follow-up singles, "Delicious Surprise (I Believe It)" and "It's Too Late To Worry," were minor top-40 hits on the Billboard country chart between 2005 and 2006.

Messina's fifth studio album, Unmistakable, dropped "Biker Chick" in July 2007. It was written by Kelly Archer and Max T. Barnes in Nashville in the fall of 2006. Despite the album's debut on November 6, 2007, it was postponed, and the single was pulled from country radio after spending 9 weeks on the charts, bringing the number to a record high of 48.

Messina's second single, "I'm Done," was released on March 22, 2008. The single peaked at number 34 on the Billboard Country Chart, at number 34. Messina, a co-wrote the song, explained that the album's release was "truly dictated by the single's success." Messina had written the song after spending time with her son on a trip to Jasper, Canada, where she saw mountains with glacier lakes. At Engine 145, where critic Sam Gadzidak thought it was a direct descendant of Lee Ann Womack's "There Is a God."

The album would be released in a trilogy of extended plays, beginning with Unmistakable: Love, which was published on April 27, 2010. On November 9, 2010, two new extended plays, Drive and Inspiration, were published.

Messina also created a campaign in 2011 to advertise the WD-40 range of cleaners. With the purchase of a specially marked Spot Shot, Carpet Fresh, 2000 Flushes, or X-14, a collection of her songs is available for free download.

Messina appeared on Bravo's hit reality show The Real Housewives of Atlanta in 2012. Messina and cast member Kandi Burruss co-created a song on the program, Burruss' first attempt at playing country music. She completed her 17-year relationship with Curb Records in December 2012.

Messina launched a Kickstarter campaign in May 2013 to help fund her next album. Dreambound Records' lead single, "Peace Sign," was released on August 23, 2013. Me, the full-length album, was released on March 18, 2014, with 12 new songs included. "A Woman's Rant" and "He's Messed Up" were released on album in 2014 as the second and third singles from the album, respectively, and Messina launched the Me Tour in October 2014.

Messina has appeared at shows since 2015, including "Will You Love Me" and "Masquerade." Messina's album attracted the attention of both country music and Christian music industries, giving Messina the opportunity to reach new audiences while also inserting herself into a completely new space.
