Jillian Hervey Life

Jillian Kristin Hervey (born June 19, 1989) is an American singer, dancer, and member of the band Lion Babe.

She is the niece of Ramon Hervey II, a musician, actress, and former Miss America Vanessa Williams.

Early life

Jillian Hervey, niece of actor Chris Williams and William A. Feilds, a former slave African-American who was elected to the Tennessee House of Representatives during Reconstruction, was discovered while watching the television show Who Do You Think You Are? traced the family's roots back to the family's line. Hervey is also of mixed English, Welsh, Irish, Finn, Italian, French, and Portuguese descent, in addition to having African-American roots.

Hervey was raised Catholic.

Hervey grew up in Chappaqua, New York, dividing time between her parents' families who divorced when she was eight years old. She has written about her experience of becoming "the only black girl in any capacity" as well as her awareness of retaliation against her mother after she was the first African-American woman to be named Miss America. "Even as she was a teenager, I knew...I knew she was going to go on her tours, and she was in Alabama, and there were snipers on rooftops aiming to kill her."

Hervey started playing guitar at the age 11 and studied dance at the New School, where she also became interested in performance art. Hervey began working with future Lion Babe collaborator Lucas Goodman during her time at the New School. They had been together years before at a dance, and Hervey reached out to him when a dance assignment at school demanded original music.

Jillian Hervey Career

Career

Hervey appeared in the Lifetime television series The Courage to Love in 2000. Vanessa Williams, Hervey's mother, was cast in the film as Henriette Delille, a free woman of color who was born into a wealthy New Orleans family in 1813.

Hervey was apparently offered a role on Gossip Girl when she was 19 but she turned down pursuing music instead.

Hervey appeared in an episode of RuPaul's Drag Race in 2012, performing the song "Glamazon" with contestants.

Hervey revealed on Lion Babe's instagram on December 28, 2021, and her and Goodman's first child together.

According to Vogue Magazine, Hervey and Lucas Goodman performed "Telling Cloud Of Gold and Honeyed Voice," their first song as the duo Lion Babe, bringing Hervey's "towering cloud of golden curls and honeyed voice" into near-instant demand. The pair has since collaborated with Pharrell Williams, Mark Ronson, and Childish Gambino. Essence's "Jungle Lady," their new single in 2014, "Talent must run in the family." Jillian Hervey, Vanessa William's daughter, has just dropped Jungle Lady, and we can't avoid listening to the sultry song."

Lion Babe performed Lollapalooza in July 2015. Lion Babe's first album, Begin, was released in 2016.

With Willow Smith, Zoe Kravitz, and FKA twigs, Hervey's "appeal is a throwback to Erykah [Badu] and Corinne Bailey Rae at the same time, which is a remarkable feat."

Hervey was also compared to Badu by the San Francisco Chronicle; "Channeling Erykah Badu's style and approach, Hervey makes tracks such as 'Whole' and "Satisfy My Love" her own, bringing forth a flittering, jazzy tenor." In 'Hold On,' Hervey's smoky timbre glides across the beat at other times.'

Hervey, a spokeswoman for MAC Cosmetics in early 2016, became a spokeswoman for the brand in early 2016, as part of a movement dubbed "Future Forward" focusing on up-and-coming musicians, as well as women of color. Situating Hervey's role at MAC alongside Taraji P. Henson's own MAC campaign and Kerry Washington's role at Neutrogena represent a significant change from the way "historically, people of color have been barred from major beauty brands' campaigns and offerings," the Observer reports.

Hervey became a Pantene hair product ambassador in June 2016, gaining media coverage for the selection's departure from major hair care brands' historical obsession with long, straight hair, and the suggestion, according to "fellow curly girls to celebrate their texture." Hervey has expressed excitement about becoming "a voice for girls with curls" in a Glamour column titled "How Lion Babe's Jillian Hervey Learned to Love Her Curly Hair" and how important it was to her that she had a "bunch of my girlfriends at the time [who] were like, "you should wear your hair naturally and curly it looks so good." "Moving to New York made me feel more free, take more risks, and get back to my natural hair," she said. "Once I [went natural], everything began to change," Hervey said at the Essence Festival in 2016. I started to feel comfortable in my skin and was really proud of who I was. I started looking for a group of black artists who inspired me, but it was kind of in my house. This Josephine Baker painting was on display in my house, and I was always aware of her, but I was unaware of her history and how much I was drawn to it. I wanted to embellish it from there."

Hervey has also drew attention in the fashion press on topics including her '70s-inflected taste, fashion shoots with her mother Williams and Williams' influence on Hervey's style, as well as Hervey's other fashion influences, such as Naomi Campbell and Chaka Khan. "a thigh-skimming, waist-whittling, flared minidress straight from G-Star's Spring 2016 series with Kurt Geiger over-the-knee, platform velvet boots," Vogue characterized one of Hervey's "signature outfits" as "a thigh-skimming, waist-whitling, flared minidress straight from G-Star's Spring 2016 collection with Kurt Geiger's over-the-kne
