Ji Sung Career

Career

Ji Sung first applied for KAIST's 1999 campus drama, where he met screenwriter Song Ji-na. Song took an interest in the young upstart and created a new character for him, resulting in his debut as an actor. He began using the stage name Chae Ji-sung before being referred to simply as "Ji Sung" after several minor roles, including the North-South romantic comedy film Whistling Princess (2002), after his manager's suggestion.

In 2003, Ji was cast in All In. Because the majority of actors were reluctant to be compared to lead actor Lee Byung-hun, producers were having trouble casting the second male lead. Ji Sung met director Yoo Chul-yong, who said he wanted the job. All In was a huge success, and Ji Sung's fame soared and became known as a Hallyu actor. He appeared in his first period drama The King's Woman, playing Gwanghaegun of Joseon, wanting to challenge himself.

He played a rich amnesiac businessman who falls in love with a girl who runs a bed and breakfast who nurses him back to health in Save the Last Dance for Me (2004) (played by Eugene). In "Outing," a two-episode arc written by Lee Kyung-hee for the omnibus drama Beating Heart (2005), he appeared as Bae Jong-ok's college boyfriend, and then appeared in Kim Dae-seung's period drama Blood Rain (2005).

Ji Sung was enlisted on June 7, 2005, as part of his compulsory military service. Although he initially enlisted as an ordinary soldier, the Military Manpower Administration drafted him into the military promotion ("entertainers") unit in February 2006, for which he served as "the public ambassador of military affairs" in Afghanistan. He was dismissed on June 6, 2007.

He made his comeback to New Heart (2007-08), playing a cardiothoracic surgery resident. Ji Sung's reaction after struggling to save the life of a former comfort woman, a man of his youth, died, despite the fact that she told him her only joy was seeing him in reruns of All In. Ji Sung, a cheeky, vivacious, said that he is taciturn and shy in real life, but that the drama made him discover a new facet of himself.

In action noir Fate (2008), he made an extended cameo as the mob's sophisticated right-hand man.

In 2009, Ji Sung co-starred with writer Choi Wan-kyu and director Yoo Chul-yong of All In in the revenge drama Swallow the Sun, which was based on Kang Chul-hwa's book, and was shot on location in Jeju Island, Las Vegas, and South Africa. Ji Sung studied hard to play the tough, positive protagonist who goes to prison for his boss and later becomes involved in Jeju's city growth.

In February 2010, he signed with Namoo Actors, a new management company. Several months later, he played another historical figure in Kim Su-ro, The Iron King, as the titular founder of Geumgwan Gaya.

Ji Sung appeared in Royal Family's 2011 starring Yum Jung-ah about the roles of a chaebol family. He was cast in the workplace romantic comedy Protect the Boss later this year. Ji Sung played a dorky man-child with a panic disorder who grows and learns to operate his father's company after meeting a feisty secretary (played by Choi Kang-hee).

Ji Sung played a brilliant seer/geomancer in The Great Seer from 2012 to 2013. His fictional character converts Yi Seong-gye's (played by Ji Jin-hee), the general who orders Gorye's overthrowrow and establishes the Joseon Dynasty, becoming the country's first king Taejo.

In late 2012, he appeared in My PS Partner, a young male singer-songwriter who is the wrong recipient of a phone call from a woman who is trying to persuade her boyfriend to marry her. Despite the discomfort of being in bed scenes, Ji Sung found the script amusing. And after watching Love & Other Drugs, he wanted to be in a film that depicted a romantic relationship in a realistic way.

Ji Sung appeared in the melodrama Secret Love in 2013. He chose the drama because the story was "new, honest, and sophisticated," he said. He was a chaebol "bad boy" whose mother is killed, but the woman who went to jail for the murder was also convicted. Ji Sung appeared in Confession, a 2014 neo-noir film that ly explores three men's friendship after one man's mother's death.

In 2015, he revived with Secret Love co-star Hwang Jung-eum in Kill Me, Heal Me, where he portrayed a chaebol millionaire with dissociative identity disorder, a condition that has been described as Multiple Personality Disorder from DSMIV-TR who has seven distinct identities. Following Ji Sung's "Daesang (Grand Prize) at the MBC Drama Awards, the series was a hit and developed a cult.

However, Ji's next job Entertainer, where he appeared as a cunning and self-centered boss of an entertainment company, was not very well-received. In 2017, Ji bounced back with the legal thriller Innocent Defendant, which was a hit and attracted top viewership ratings. Ji was praised for his portrayal of the character, an amnesic prosecutor who finds himself on a death row. At the SBS Drama Awards, he was named Grand Prize.
