Jermell Charlo Career

Early life and amateur career

Jermell is a year younger than his identical twin Jermall by a single minute. Both brothers are graduates of Alief Hastings High School in Houston, Texas. They started boxing after their father, a former boxer, was led to the gym. Jermell retired after two years as a student at the 2005 Junior Olympics at age fifteen, winning a bronze medal. He ended his amateur career with a record of 56 victories and eight losses.

Professional career

With a four-round decision victory over Corey Sommerville on December 8, 2007, he began his professional career at the age of 17. He stopped Jesus Villareal in three rounds on April 19, 2008, and after winning an exciting first-round TKO over Dwayne Jones in June, Charlo added Rodrigo Villareal (TKO4) and Deon Nash (W6) to his victims list before the year was over. Federico Flores Jr. won by a narrow margin over Juan Serrano in the eighth round on Friday, ending the year with a second-round knockout of unbeaten prospect Abdon Lozano.

In the third round, Charlo defeated Chris Chatman of Chicago with a spectacular one-punch knockout. In 2009, Chatman's only previous loss was a six-round decision to 2008 U.S. Olympian Demetrius Andrade, but he was no match for Charlo, who was essentially ineffective for the majority of the contest. He landed a flush right hand to Chatman's chin and knocked him out at 1 minute, 22 seconds in the third round. Charlo had a record of 17 victories, with no losses in the distance, despite 8 wins.

Charlo defeated former light welterweight champion Demetrius Hopkins (33-2-1, 13 KOs) on June 8, 2013 (11 KOs). Charlo, with his violence and power shots, dominated the proceedings in the early rounds, defeating Hopkins by unanimous decision in a close back and forth affair. All three judges gave it a 115-113 score. The audience seemed to be dissatisfied with the performances.

In a scheduled 10 round fight at the BB&T Center in Sunrise, Florida, Charlo next fought against 34-year-old Jose Angel Rodriguez (17-2-1, 2 KOs) on October 10. Charlo defeated the fight by TKO in the last round.

Charlo will step up and face Philadelphia veteran boxer and former world champion Gabriel Rosado (21-7, 13 KOs) on January 25, 2014 at the Washington, D.C. Armory in Washington, D.C., according to showtime. Rosado was 0-2-1 in his last three fights before the fight, and he was 0-2-1 in his last three fights. Since losing little success at middleweight and announcing that he will be Charlo's toughest battle, he was also falling back to light middleweight. Charlo passed the biggest test of his career, and he did a good job doing so as he easily defeated Rosado to win a lopsided 10-round unanimous vote. The judges awarded the 100-90, 99-91, and 97-93, which was in Charlo's favour. Compared to Rosado's 18%, Charlo threw 50% of his punches. On Showtime, the fight attracted 472,000 viewers.

Charlo defeated Charlie Ota at the Bell Centre in Montreal, Quebec, on May 24, 2014. Charlo was disqualified in round 3, but he retained a unanimous decision after twelve rounds, with the scorecards reading 118-109 twice and 115-111.

Charlo was supposed to face Demetrius Andrade (21-0, 14 KOs) at Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino on December 13, 2014 for the WBO light middleweight championship, but due to purse issues, the fight was postponed until November 16. Andrade had been expected $250,000 but later increased to what would be a career high $300,000.

Charlo fought in December 2014 against Mario Alberto Lozano under the MGM Grand Arena in Las Vegas, following the cancellation of the Andrade fight. On all three scorecards of the 10 round tournament, Charlo scored a convincing 100-90.

Banner Promotions, a banner promotion that promotes Andrade, said the war was back and likely to take place in the Spring of 2015. A fight was announced during the following month, but no one appeared.

Charlo will be seen on a doubleheader at the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas on February 17, 2015, according to Showtime. Vanes Martirosyan, a former world championship challenger, was defeated by 35-1-1, 25 KOs), on March 28 in a match (35-1-1, 25 KOs). The Illusions Theatre in San Antonio, Texas, and the StubHub Center in Carson, California, were among the other venues addressing the fight. The match was fought in ten rounds. Martirosyan weighed 153 pounds, but Charlo weighed in at 154.75 pounds. There was no hard weight limit in place because there was no title at stake. There was an increase/-1 lb in the contract, it seems. Tolerance is a virtue. This is a typical occurrence in non-title matches. Charlo was awarded a largely partisan vote. The scores were 97-93, 96-94, and 96-94. Both fighters began their combat slow, utilizing their revered jabs. Charlo hit the faster ones, but they did not suffer with no injury, despite being point scoring shots. Martirosyan was the boxer who was getting up to catch the bigger shots. Martirosyan began to miss the majority of his punches by round 4, despite Charlo's being able to withstand them. The remainder of the battle was close. Following an accidental clash of heads in round 8, there was a timeout period. Martirosyan's left eye was checked by the ringside doctor. Martirosyan said he had won the fight.

Charlo will meet former light middleweight champion Joachim Alcine (35-7-2, 21 KOs) on October 25, the Premier Boxing Champions announced on September 25, 2010. Charlo was able to win round 6 of their scheduled 12 round match after knocking Alcine out in round 6 of their scheduled 12 round match. Charlo outboxed Alcine for five rounds before he was struck in round 6 with a right hand to the head. Alcine beat the count but it was apparent that it was painful. Charlo carried on the fight by launching a barrage of punches to which Alcine had no response, causing referee Jon Schorle to call off the match at 1 minute and 20 seconds. Charlo called out the recently retired Floyd Mayweather after the match. This was Alcine's last professional fight before he announced his resignation at the age of 39.

Charlo will face John Jackson (20-2, 15 KOs) for the vacant WBC light middleweight title at the annual WBC convention in Kunming, China. Following Floyd Mayweather Jr.'s resignation, the position became vacant. The brawl in Las Vegas on May 21, 2015 at The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas. Erislandy Lara, Vanes Martirosyan, Austin Trout, and brother Jermall, who successfully defends his IBF title, were among the card's highlights. Charlo had only won one round on all three judges' scorecards through the first seven rounds, poor trailing (64-69). Charlo struck Jackson with a right hand to the head and two left as Jackson turned away to adjust his mouthpiece and struggled to hold his guard. Referee Tony Weeks jumped in to shield Jackson, who had been knocked into the corner turnbuckle, and cried out 51 seconds into the game.

In December 2016, the WBC 54th Convention in Miami, Florida, took place. Charlo would take on two mandatory battles, according to the site. The first of the two defenses will be vying for the first time by the WBC in February 2017. When the winner of #5 ranked Erickson Lubin vs. Jorge Cota ranked #8 on March 4, the second mandatory will be decided. Lubin knocked Cota out in round 4 of their match, pushing for the youngest world champion at the age of 21.

The Shawn Porter vs. Andre Berto undercard match was postponed until April 22, 2017. Charlo would make $100,000 and Hatley would receive a $85,000 check, according to the fight. Charlo won his WBC title for the first time after knocking Hatley out unconscious in round 6 after a right hook to the head. Charlo was in charge of launching successive power shots before the game, putting them right into place. Hatley was also knocked out in round 3 after a sequence of shots from Charlo. Charlo discussed the possibility of a unification fight against Jarlo Hurd, who took the vacant IBF crown in February 2017, the same title that had once belonged to Jermell's twin brother Jermall who fought up to middleweight in the aftermath of the fight. On Showtime, the fight attracted nearly 41,000 viewers.

The WBC updated their rankings on May 11, 2017 naming Erickson Lubin (18-0, 13 KOs) at number one, putting him 21 years old and undefeated American prospect Erickson Lubin (18-0, 13 KOs) at number one. Following his victory over Cota, he stepped up. Lubin was named the first challenger for Charlo's world title by the rankings. Jartt Hurd defending his IBF title against former light middleweight champion Austin Trout on Showtime on July 20, according to Boxing Scene. On August 24, Ringtv announced that the match between Charlo and Lubin would take place in New York City's Barclays Center on October 14 in October. Erislandy Lara defends his WBA title against Terrell Gausha, with the card being branded as a triple-header.

Charlo won the fight by a first-round knockout to keep his WBC title in front of 7,643 people. The first round was tense, with Charlo and Lubin not throwing much and hardly being struck. Charlo landed a massive right hand, flush on Lubin, drawing him backwards onto the canvas, bringing him to an end. Lubin was able to get up, but referee Harvey Docket, who called the fight off right after Lubin was pulled and seeing him in pain, stopped the fight right away. "Give me another award," Charlo said after the match. I want Hurd. Hurd just fought. He just won. Give me Hurd. Hurd is what I want." Lubin felt he should have continued, but said the suspension was justified, saying, "He caught me with a blind eye." I didn't expect it coming. He landed it. I woke up. I felt like I should keep fighting, but it doesn't happen. I wanted to entertain the audience. I was stunned by him with a blind shot that I didn't recognize." The official time of the stoppage was 2 minutes, 41 seconds. After the brawl ended, a member of Lubin's camp threw a chair at Jermall Charlo. Charlo's purse was $450,000, while Lubin earned $225,000 for the fight. On Showtime, the fight attracted 495,000 viewers and surpassed 537,000 viewers.

Charlo will make his third appearance of his WBC crown on June 9 in the undercard of Santa Cruz vs. Mares II at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. Charlo will face former world champion Austin Trout (31-4, 17 KOs) on April 10, according to the team. Trout's third world championship appearance in his last four fights will be fought in the series. He suffered his first stoppage loss in October 2017 to IBF champion Jarrett Hurd's hands, but before that, he lost a decision to Jermell's brother and then-IBF champion Jermall Charlo. Trout beat Colombian boxer Juan De Angel in February 2018 by an 8-round unanimous decision. Charlo held his title after beating Trout in a close match. One judge ruled the contest 113-113, but Charlo's remaining two judges scored the fight 115-111 and 118-108, giving him the majority decision victory. In rounds 3 and 9, Charlo knocked Trout out. The game, which was mainly a tactical one, was not well received by the fans attending. During the match and again during Charlo's post-fight interview, they booed. A left hook to the head was used in the first knockdown. Trout began to fight more defensively after the knockdown. Trout was defeated for the second time by a counter left hook. Trout said, "Take away the knockdowns, and I fought the fight." "I knew he'd come in and try to recover," Charlo expressed his dissatisfaction. "I could hook him with my hook." Charlo made 106 of 421 punches (25 percent), and Trout landed 82 of 407 of 407 of his punches (20%), according to CompuBox. (20%) Charlo was paid $750,000 for his services, while Trout was paid $250,000. The fight averaged 532,000 viewers and reached 575,000.

Premier Boxing Champions revealed a doubleheader at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York, on December 22, 2018. Jermell Charlo will defend his WBC light middleweight crown against Tony Harrison (27-2, 21 KOs) and Jermall Charlo will defend his WBC interim middleweight championship in the main event, which will be televised by FOX. To see who would close the show, the twins turned a coin. Harrison was going into the fight having won his first three fights after losing to Jarrett Hurd in February 2017. On October 25, the official press conference was held.

Charlo's first loss as a pro boxer was decided unanimously by a landslide.

Charlo took on WBC #1 at super welterweight Jorge Cota on June 23, 2019. Charlo defeated his opponent with 2:41 left in the third round, right after Cota beat the clock from a previous knockdown.

Charlo used the rematch clause after his first loss. The fight will be held on the 23rd June 2019 at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Paradise, Nevada. Harrison was unable to participate in the war and was replaced by Mexican Jorge Cota. In the 3rd round, Charlo defeated Cota out of the competition. Harrison is fully recovered, and Charlo will face him at the Toyota Centre in Ontario, California, on December 21. Charlo defeated in the eleventh round by the 11th round and became the first world light middleweight champion.

On September 26, 2020 in a unification match at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut, Charlo was scheduled to defend his title against WBA (Super), IBF, and IBO light middleweight champion Jeison Rosario. In the eighth round, Charlo defeated Rosario to unify the super-welterweight division. Castao vs. Charlo vs. Castao vs. Castao Castao

In a showdown in San Antonio, Texas, Charlo defeated undefeated WBO light middleweight champion Brian Castao on July 17, 2021. They fought in a close match, with scores of 117-111 Charlo, 114-113 Castao, and 114-114. The result was divisive, with Andre Ward's 117-111 Charlo card dubbed "terrible" by Judge Nelson Vazquez's "terrible" version being praised in the post-fight press conference. Charlo wrote: "I think it was a closer contest than it seemed" in the post-fight press conference. Somebody had it like 117-111; 117-111 was a big difference." On May 14, Charlo and Castano rematched. It was competitive in Round 10 after the referee called it off, but Castano was badly hurt and Castano was badly wounded, causing the referee to stop it. Charlo undisputed champion, WBA, WBC, and IBF light middleweight belt belts, becoming the 7th male 4 belt champion in history.
