Early life
Tripplehorn was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma, daughter of Suzanne Ferguson and Tom Tripplehorn and Tom Tripplehorn, who was once a guitarist with Gary Lewis & the Playboys, on June 10, 1963. When she was two years old, her parents divorced. She graduated from Edison High School in 1981 and spent a semester at the University of Tulsa. Creature Feature (1982–83) and Night Shift (1983). She spent time on a part-time and then full-time with local rock radio station KMOD before moving to Juilliard. Tripplehorn first attended the Juilliard School's Drama Division as a member of Group 19 (1986–1990), which also included Laura Linney.

Career
Tripplehorn began her stage work. She appeared in John Patrick Shanley's The Big Funk in 1990 and co-starred Val Kilmer in John Ford's 1993 film 'Tis Pity She's a Whore.' She has appeared in Anton Chekov's Three Sisters opposite Amy Irving and Lili Taylor on Broadway. Tripplehorn made her film debut in 1992 in a supporting role in the erotic thriller Basic Instinct. Abby McDeere, opposite Tom Cruise in The Firm, appeared in Abby McDeere the following year, and she appeared in Waterworld with Kevin Costner in 1995. Tripplehorn performed in the 1997 box-office bomb 'Til There Were You'. She appeared in small films, including Office Killer, Monument Ave., and Sliding Doors in 1999; and in the British romantic comedy Mickey Blue Eyes, she appeared opposite Hugh Grant.
