Jean Rochefort Career

Life and career

Rochefort was born in Paris, France, on the 29th of April 1930, to Breton parents. He was educated at the Lycée de Corneille in Rouen.

Rochefort was nineteen years old when he entered the Centre d'Art Dramatique de la rue Blanche. He later joined the Conservatoire National. He appeared in Compagnie Grenier Hussenot for seven years after finishing his national service in 1953. He was known for his ability to act both drama and comedy. He then became a television and cinema actor, as well as a film producer.

Rochefort appeared in Cartouche, Captain Fracasse, and in Marvelous Angelique as his son and daughter in 1972. He starred in this drama as a man who left his family for ten years before returning to work. He appeared in this film for 41 years as a parent of adult children (the young Claude Jade was already 23). He grew a moustache, his trademark, which he only had to remove in 1996 for Ridicule.

He was the leading actor of Hearth Fires as a man who puts his marriage life in jeopardy with Danièle Delorme. Rochefort gained a following due to the success of this film. He appeared in the Yves Robert comedy Le Grand Blond with une chaussure noire, a role he reprised in 1974's Le Retour du grand blond, which also starring Robert. In the mini-series Le Comte de Monte Cristo, he appeared as "Fernand de Morcerf" opposite Gerard Depardieu in 1998.

He discovered his passion for horses and equestrianism in his thirties during Cartouche's shooting. He was a horse breeder since then and owned Le Haras de Villequoy. In 2004, his passion led him to become a horse consultant on French television. He received two César Awards, most notable for 1976, Best Supporting Actor for Que la fête, and Best Actor for Le Crabe-tambour, 1978.

He was the narrator of the French version of Welcome to Pooh Corner in the eighties, replacing Laurie Main. This made him very popular with children at the time, and Disney recruited him to film several audio versions of Disney's classic films. Philippe Noiret and Jean-Pierre Marielle both returned to comedy with Les Grands Ducs in the 1990s, where he appeared with two other actors from his time in a similar role.

After being discovered as "the perfect Quixote" by director Terry Gilliam, he was supposed to star in The Man Who Killed Don Quixote. Rochefort learned to speak English just for the part. Sadly, he began suffering from a herniated disc when he was among other manufacturing issues. Since being unable to film for months, the project was cancelled. Lost in La Mancha was a documentary about the failed attempt.

He married Alexandra Moscwa in 1960, and he had two children: Marie (1962) and Julien (1965). Nicole Garcia, an actress-filmmaker, had a son Pierre when he was born. Louise (1990) and Clémence (1992), two children from his second marriage to Françoise Vidal.
