Jay Ajayi Career

College career

Ajayi played and played college football for Boise State from 2011 to 2014. In 2011, he was redshirted as a freshman at Boise State University. After robbery of a pair of sweatpants at a local Walmart in October 2011, he was sentenced to five days in jail. He appeared in 11 games as a redshirt freshman in 2012. In his second game, he had 82 rushes for 548 yards and four touchdowns, including 118 yards and a touchdown on just six carries against New Mexico. In game seven against Nevada, he played in 12 of 13 games and rushed for 100+ yards in six of them, including 24 carries for 222 yards and three touchdowns. He ended the season by throwing the ball 249 times for 1,425 yards and 18 touchdowns. He was the first Boise State player to rush for 100+ yards in ten games in a season, including two 200+ yard performances against Colorado State and Utah State as a freshman. In the Broncos' 38-30 victory over the Arizona Wildcats in the 2014 Fiesta Bowl, he ended his season with a 134-yard three touchdown play. He finished the season ranked fifth in the nation with a school-record 1,823 passing yards and second nationally, only to Wisconsin's Melvin Gordon with 28 rushing touchdowns (also a school record). Ajayi's last season at Boise State saw him account for 43.3 percent of the team's total yards and touchdowns, ranking third among running back prospects entering the 2015 NFL Draft, behind Melvin Gordon and Indiana's Tevin Coleman. The Associated Press named him as a first-team All-Mountain West Conference pick for the second straight season and third-team All-American honors.

Ajayi revealed on December 21, 2014, that he would forego his senior career and enter the 2015 NFL Draft. He had 678 rushes for 3,796 yards and 50 rushing touchdowns, which ranked third, third, and tied for second on the Boise State career charts. He is Boise State's first quarterback to rush 200+ yards in three games.

Professional career

Ajayi was drafted in the fifth round of the 2015 NFL Draft with the 149th overall pick by the Miami Dolphins (traded from the Minnesota Vikings in exchange for Mike Wallace). He was the 14th of 22 running backs chosen in the draft for the first time this year. The Dolphins signed him to a four-year, $220,813 rookie deal on May 7, 2015, a signing bonus of $220,813.

Ajayi was placed on injured reserve/designated to return due to broken ribs he suffered in the Dolphins' last exhibition game on September 6, 2015. On November 8, 2015, he made his NFL debut against the Buffalo Bills and rushed five times for 41 yards (8.2 average). In a 30–14 loss, he scored his first professional touchdown against the San Diego Chargers. He had 49 attempts for 187 yards (3.8 percent) and one touchdown in his rookie season. He has also caught seven receptions for 90 yards.

Ajayi was the de facto starter for the Dolphins after losing starting running back Lamar Miller to the Houston Texans via free agency. However, he was named the backup after free agent running back Arian Foster supplanted him as the starter during training camp. As the team traveled to Miami for a road game against the Seattle Seahawks, head coach Adam Gase was suspended for the season opener and Ajayi was left in Miami. Foster was activated the following week and had five carries for 14 yards against the New England Patriots after being sidelined in the second half due to a groin injury. Ajayi came into a role as the Dolphins' lead running back after Foster's injury and eventual in-season retirement.

Ajayi continued his Week 6204-yard and two touchdown performance against the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 7, becoming only the fourth player in NFL history alongside O. J. Simpson (twice), Earl Campbell, and former Miami Dolphin Ricky Williams to rush for over two hundred yards in two straight games. In back-to-back games in Weeks 6, 7 and 8, Ajayi was named AFC Offensive Player of the Week two weeks in a row for his 200+ rushing yards. Ajayi played in their third 200-yard game, this time at the expense of the Buffalo Bills, with a 57-yard sprint to position Andrew Franks up to kick a game-winning field goal in overtime. He became only the fourth player in NFL history to rush over 200 yards in three games in a single season, and the only player to do it as early as his second season. He became one of only 15 players in NFL history with three or more career 200+ yards rushing games as a result of his Week 16 appearance. For the third time in the 2016 season, he was named AFC Offensive Player of the Week. In his playoff debut in the 30-12 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers in the Wild Card Round of the playoffs, he had 16 passes for 33 yards. He was named to the AFC roster for the 2017 Pro Bowl following his breakout season in 2016. He was ranked 69th on the NFL Top 100 Players of 2017 list by his peers.

As the Dolphins' top running back in the 2017 season, Ajayi made his debut in the 2017 season. Ajayi did not participate in Week 1 due to Hurricane Irma, so the Dolphins made their season debut against the Los Angeles Chargers on Week 2, where he had 28 carries for 122 yards in the 19-17 victory. Ajayi recovered for 77 yards against the Tennessee Titans and 130 yards against the Atlanta Falcons, who were down for just 16 and 46 yards in Weeks 3 and 4. He only had 74 yards in his next two games, and by Week 8, he was the only NFL rusher with 100+ yards since being out of place for a rushing touchdown.

Ajayi was traded to the Philadelphia Eagles for a 2018 fourth round draft pick on October 31, 2017. In Ajayi's debut with the Eagles, he ran for 77 yards on eight carries and one touchdown in a 51–23 victory, his longest being a 48-yard sprint for a touchdown. In week 11 Ajayi rushed for 91 yards on 7 attempts against the Dallas Cowboys, helping his team beat the Dallas Cowboys in Week 9, which was their first appearance in the series. In the third quarter, he had a career-high 71 yards in the game. The Eagles were ranked No. 1 in the NFC during the playoffs as the top seed. In the 15-10 victory over the Atlanta Falcons in the Divisional Round, he had 54 passing yards and 44 receiving yards. In the 38–7 victory over the Minnesota Vikings, he finished with 73 passing yards and 26 passing yards. As the Eagles defeated the New England Patriots in Super Bowl LII, Ajayi ran for 57 yards, giving them their first Super Bowl victory in franchise history.

Ajayi played in his second consecutive multi-touchdown game against the Atlanta Falcons in 2018. In the 18–12 victory, he had 15 rushing yards and two rushing touchdowns, with the second being the late go-ahead touchdown. After suffering a torn ACL against the Minnesota Vikings on Week 5, Ajayi was put on injured reserve on October 8th. He had 184 passing yards and three touchdowns on the season.

Ajayi re-signed with the Eagles on November 15, 2019 after the team made running back Darren Sproles injured reserve. The Eagles released him on December 23rd. He appeared in three games and had 10 passes for 30 yards.

Esports career

Ajayi was signed by Major League Soccer's Philadelphia Union as the club's esports star in eMLS League Series One on January 7, 2020.
