Jason Isbell Career

Career

Many musicians took Isbell as a child. Since David Hood, the father of Drive-By Truckers co-founder Patterson Hood, was in town on Friday and Saturday nights in local restaurants and bars, he had a blast getting to know session bassist David Hood. Patterson Hood and his future Drive-By Truckers co-founder, Mike Cooley, had grown old and had migrated out of town by this time. Isbell will attend David Hood and others perform. It took a while for him to tell them he played, but they did end up with him being involved in friendship and mentorship.

When Isbell first began demos and eventually signed a publishing contract with FAME Studios of Muscle Shoals, Alabama, he was 21 years old. He served with FAME for 15 years, most notably in the form of his solo album Southeastern. Isbell's solo albums at FAME Studios, as well as the Drive-By Truckers' The Dirty South, were also recorded.

While touring in favor of their album Southern Rock Opera, Isbell, 22, joined the Drive-By Truckers in 2001. The band lives in Athens, Georgia, where Isbell was based while with the band. Patterson Hood, a co-founder, recalls meeting Isbell through Dick Cooper, a Muscle Shoals mutual friend. After Isbell sat in with the group at an acoustic house party when guitarist Rob Malone did not appear, Hood invited him to join the Drive-By Truckers.

Isbell performed and performed many songs on the Drive-By Truckers' next three albums, including 2003's Decoration Day, 2004's The Dirty South, and 2006's A Blessing and a Curse. Isbell's name of Decoration Day was revealed by Isbell in the 2014 Live from Lincoln Center concert to be a true tale about his family members.

For the majority of his time as a member of Isbell, he was married to Shonna Tucker, who joined the band after Isbell was named bassist. The two were featured on the band's documentary The Secret to a Happy Ending. The two people were divorced later that year.

Isbell revealed on April 5, 2007, that he was no longer a member of the Drive-By Truckers. Patterson Hood revealed the split on the band's official website the following day. Hood described the part of the ways as "amicable" in his letter to the fans, as well as Isbell's solo efforts. Isbell had been with the Drive-By Truckers for six years.

Isbell and Hood Cooley joined Handsome and Mike Cooley for a benefit at the Shoals Theater in Florence, Alabama, on June 15, 2014. It was the first time Isbell had performed with his former bandmates since they split in 2007. In Hood's new adopted hometown, Portland, Oregon, Hood appeared alongside Isbell onstage and performed a few Drive-By Truckers songs together.

On July 10, 2007, Isbell's first solo album, Sirens of the Ditch, was released. On his tour in 2012, Isbell introduced singer-songwriter Ryan Adams. Both performed in acoustic sets for the first time.

Isbell's Southeastern, his fourth solo album, was released on June 11, 2013. Southeastern's wife, Amanda Shires, was largely critical, receiving a score of 87 on Metacritic, with accompanying vocals by Dave Cobb. The 2014 American Music Awards went to Southeastern, which culminated in Isbell's clean sweep. Southeastern received the Year's Best of the Year Award, Isbell was named Artist of the Year, and the album "Cover Me Up" was voted Song of the Year. By the Royal Institute of British Architects in 2022, it had been named Gold. Ken Tucker, a journalist for NPR, ranked Southeast at No. 1 on the charts. 1 on his top ten albums of 2013. Artists like Bruce Springsteen and John Prine praised Isbell's record. The Jackson House, a historic home in Moulton, Alabama, appears in the song "Traveling Alone."

Something More Than Free, Isbell's fifth solo album, was released on Southeastern Records on July 17, 2015. Dave Cobb produced the album, which was recorded in Nashville's Sound Emporium studio with a full band. Isbell was on a North American tour to promote the album during the summer of 2015, with four nights at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville at the end of October. Isbell performed "The Life You Choose" on BBC Live With Jools Holland in April 2016, one of Something More Than Free's tracks, "Isbell" performed on the BBC live-music show Later With Jools Holland.

Concerning Southeastern, Isbell said Something More Than Free has a feeling of pride, which reflects his impending fatherhoodhood and a forward-facing momentum. Centro-Matic, a now defunct band from Denton, Texas, was one of the band's back-to-back in his Drive-By Truckers days.

On Billboard Magazine's rock, folk, and country record charts, Something More Than Free debuted at number one. Despite the fact that Isbell had been a hit in the Americana genre, this was the first time he had been recognized across genres. The album was well-received, winning two Grammy awards for Best Americana Album and Best American Roots Song ("24 Frames"). Isbell, a four-time winner, was nominated for three more Americana Music Awards: Album of the Year (Something More Than Free), Artist of the Year ("24 Frames"), and Artist of the Year on May 11, 2016. He was one of the first two winners, while Chris Stapleton was named Artist of the Year.

The 400 Unit, Isbell's band, is mainly made up of musicians from the Muscle Shoals, Alabama, area.

The lineup is:

The band's name derives from the 400 Unit, a colloquial term for Eliza Coffee Memorial Hospital's psychiatric ward in Florence, Alabama. It was originally called the 400 Unit because it was in a separate building from the main three-story hospital. The ward was renamed as the Behavioral Health Center, also known as 1st North, and is located on the hospital's first floor after repairs in the 1980s.

On February 17, 2009, Jason Isbell and The 400 Unit's eponymous album was released on Lightning Rod Records. Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit was Isbell's second solo debut and first appearance with The 400 Unit. Centro-Matic's Matt Pence co-produced and engineered the album, as well as playing drums on the record.

On April 12, 2011, Isbell and the 400 Unit's second album, Here We Rest, was released. The band produced and released the album. At the 2012 American Music Awards, the album "Alabama Pines" was named Song of the Year.

The Nashville Sound, Isbell's new album with the 400 Units, was announced on March 13, 2017. On June 16, 2017, the album was released. At the 60th anniversary performance, Isbell and the band received the Grammy Award for Best American Roots Song, while Isbell received the Grammy Award for Best American Roots Song.

Isbell was announced to be the official artist-in-residence at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum in October 2017. On John Prine's album The Tree of Forgiveness, he appeared as a guest. Isbell performed "Maybe It's Time" on the soundtrack of the 2018 film A Star Is Born, where actor Bradley Cooper's character, Jackson Maine, appeared.

Reunions, Isbell's latest album, was released on February 11, 2020. It was announced on May 15, 2020. Isbell returns to work with producer Dave Cobb and features guest vocals from Rival Sons and David Crosby. The album was revealed alongside the debut of "Be Afraid," the album's first song, which debuted at number five on the Adult Alternative Songs chart, despite a career high rank. On the same chart, the second single, "Dreamsicle," reached number 20.

Isbell revealed on Twitter on November 5, 2020, that if Joe Biden wins the state of Georgia in the 2020 US presidential election, he would record a charity album containing covers of songs by Georgia artists, such as R.E.M. Gladys Knight and Prince Valentia. Biden had been predicted that he would win the state but on Twitter, he reiterated that he was serious and that he would start working on the album shortly. Georgia Blue was officially released on September 14, 2021, with release dates of October 15 for the digital version and November 26 for CD and vinyl. To the charity tribute album The Metallica Blacklist, Isbell and the 400 Unit contributed a cover of Metallica's "Sad but True" by the Isbell and the 400 Units.

Isbell's first acting role came in 2016 when he guest starred in the animated television series Squidbillies, providing the voice of pastor Kyle Nubbins. Elizabeth Cook, Todd Snider, and the Drive-By Truckers were among the show's featured artists in cameo roles, including Elizabeth Cook, Todd Snider, and the Drive-By Truckers. In the HBO film Deadwood: The Movie, Isbell appeared as a guitar-playing wedding guest. Isbell appeared in a 2021 episode of Billions, another television show known for giving cameo roles to singers, with Isbell playing himself in an art exhibit.

Isbell was cast in the forthcoming Martin Scorsese film Killers of the Flower Moon in 2021 as Bill Smith, a survivor of the Osage Indian murders. Isbell's role in the film was announced on April 6, 2021, marking his debut on film; fellow country singer Sturgill Simpson was also cast; and actor Sturgill Simpson was also listed as a participant in the cast.
