Jason Blake Career

Playing career

He played for the Waterloo Black Hawks of the United States Hockey League (USHL). He spent one year at Ferris State University before moving to North Dakota and playing on their 1996–1997 National Championship team.

In 1999, Blake was signed as a free agent by the Los Angeles Kings. He was acquired by the New York Islanders in a trade with the Los Angeles Kings in January 2001, receiving a conditional pick. With 28 and 57, respectively, Blake set career records in goals and points during the 2005-06 season. He led both totals and 69 points in the 2012 season. On April 5, 2007, the 40th goal was scored against the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Blake, along with Islanders teammates Rick DiPietro and Mark Parrish, competed for Team USA at the Winter Olympics in Turin Italy in February 2006. Peter Laviolette, his former coach with the Islanders, was in charge of Team USA.

On October 31, 2006, Blake scored his 100th career NHL goal against the Chicago Blackhawks at the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum. In the 3rd period, the 100th goal was scored on the power play late.

During the 2006–07 NHL season, Blake was named an all-star for the first time in his career. In the 2007 NHL All-Star Game, he had 2 assists.

Blake became an unrestricted free agent at the conclusion of the 2006–07 season. He was quoted in Newsday in February 2007 that if not re-signed by the Islanders before the NHL trading deadline, he would undoubtedly test the free agent market. Blake was neither traded nor resigned before the deadline, and on July 1, 2007, Blake signed with the Toronto Maple Leafs to a five-year deal worth US$20 million.

Blake revealed on October 8, 2007, a rare yet easily treatable form of cancer. For the remainder of the season, he continued to play for the Maple Leafs.

Blake played in all 82 regular season games in his first season with Toronto. For a total of 52 points, he scored 15 goals and 37 assists. Despite having a large number of points, he struggled to score goals all season, taking over 300 shots on goal, with a career high, but only 15 goals. At the end of the season, Bill Masterton Trophy was given for perseverance and devotion to hockey through the difficult times he faced after being diagnosed with cancer.

Blake was traded to the Anaheim Ducks with Vesa Toskala in the 2010-10 season, and the Anaheim Ducks were drafted with Jean-Sébastien Giletto on January 31, 2010.
