Jamie Durie Life

Jamie Paul Durie OAM (born 3 June 1970) is an Australian horticulturalist and landscape designer, television presenter, and author of eleven books on landscape architecture, garden planning, and lifestyle.

He is the founder and director of PATIO Landscape Architecture and Durie Design, as well as a 2008 Gold Medal winner at the Royal Horticultural Society's prestigious Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Chelsea Flower Show in Chelsea, London, which was conceived by Durie.

More than 50 design shows have been broadcast around the world as of 2018.Durie is the television host of the 2008 Australian lifestyle show The Outdoor Room, broadcast on the Seven Network.

In 2009, he hosted the HGTV Showdown, a dynamic design makeover show.

From 2007 to 2010, Durie hosted The Victory Garden, a PBS show in the United States.

The show is PBS network's longest-running gardening television series. Following the demise of The Outdoor Room on the Seven Network in 2010, Durie reimagined the series as The Outdoor Room with Jamie Durie.

Durie assembled a new team of top-notch designers, horticulturists, and contractors who were unable to bring his own Australian design team along.

Durie rescues forlorn yards in Southern California with design schemes influenced by gardens and landscapes from around the world in his HGTV series.

Jamie Durie, shot mainly in and around Los Angeles, uses a combination of low-water plantings and reclaimed hardscape to create intimate, livable environments for first-time non-gardeners.

Early life

Durie was born in Manly, northern Sydney, New South Wales, and spent his formative years in Tom Price, Western Australia's Pilbara region, with his mother and maternal grandmother both Sri Lankan. Daphne de Zylva, his grandmother, was born in Sri Lanka and served with his English grandfather in the air force during World War II. In the 1950s, they immigrated to Australia. Durie recalls that he and his grandmother used to bake and garden together. She showed him how to make his first curry. He has passed on a love of Sri Lankan culture and lifestyle. Durie and his parents divorced when he was ten years old, and he and his brother Chris moved to Queensland's Gold Coast. Nanna, his paternal grandmother, was a volunteer surfer on the NSW Central Coast. He tried his hand at cabinetmaking and modeled beachwear part-time after leaving high-school in Brisbane at the age of 15. In Manpower Australia's all-male revue troupe, Durie got his start in his teens as an exotic dancer. Durie's rep introduced him to Manpower Australia, a touring dance troupe best known for its male dance performances and the dancers' distinctive physical appearance and sex appeal. Durie has been touring internationally with Manpower Australia, as both a conductor and principal dancer, performing acrobatics and trapeze acts in Las Vegas, Nevada. He claims he was "the lead performer and created the scenes and costumes." Durie explains that although Manpower Australia was perceived as putting the risqué into danger, the performances were highly professional and that even his grandmother was familiar with. "The 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s in Australia were very chauvinistic, and the female body was overexploited," he explains, "There needs to be social change." Durie, a student at Manpower Australia at age 26, retired from schooling by completing a four-year horticultural and landscape design course.

Personal life

Durie owns properties in Pittwater, Sydney's Northern Beaches, and Los Angeles. Durie is single, but he has been engaged three times. "I've always been career-focused, and my friendships have suffered as a result of this," he says. Nadine Bush, Durie's former creative director, is the co-author of Living Design (2016, Lantern Australia Publishers). Durie claims she is a friend and colleague.

Taylor, Durie's older daughter who lives in Los Angeles, has been living in Los Angeles since his time with Michelle Glennock. "We go camping together, surfing, and bike riding," Durie says. "I want simply to find more balance and walk down the little path of self discovery," Durie says.

Durie is currently engaged to Ameka Jane. Beau J Durie, the family's daughter, was born in July 2021.

Durie volunteers time and resources for many charities, including the Children's Cancer Institute and The Children's Hospital at Westmead (formerly known as the Royal Alexandra Hospital for Children or Sydney Children's Hospital Network, Westmead), Sydney, New South Wales, Australia.
