Early life
Durie was born in Manly, northern Sydney, New South Wales, and spent his formative years in Tom Price, Western Australia's Pilbara region, with his mother and maternal grandmother both Sri Lankan. Daphne de Zylva, his grandmother, was born in Sri Lanka and served with his English grandfather in the air force during World War II. In the 1950s, they immigrated to Australia. Durie recalls that he and his grandmother used to bake and garden together. She showed him how to make his first curry. He has passed on a love of Sri Lankan culture and lifestyle. Durie and his parents divorced when he was ten years old, and he and his brother Chris moved to Queensland's Gold Coast. Nanna, his paternal grandmother, was a volunteer surfer on the NSW Central Coast. He tried his hand at cabinetmaking and modeled beachwear part-time after leaving high-school in Brisbane at the age of 15. In Manpower Australia's all-male revue troupe, Durie got his start in his teens as an exotic dancer. Durie's rep introduced him to Manpower Australia, a touring dance troupe best known for its male dance performances and the dancers' distinctive physical appearance and sex appeal. Durie has been touring internationally with Manpower Australia, as both a conductor and principal dancer, performing acrobatics and trapeze acts in Las Vegas, Nevada. He claims he was "the lead performer and created the scenes and costumes." Durie explains that although Manpower Australia was perceived as putting the risqué into danger, the performances were highly professional and that even his grandmother was familiar with. "The 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s in Australia were very chauvinistic, and the female body was overexploited," he explains, "There needs to be social change." Durie, a student at Manpower Australia at age 26, retired from schooling by completing a four-year horticultural and landscape design course.
Personal life
Durie owns properties in Pittwater, Sydney's Northern Beaches, and Los Angeles. Durie is single, but he has been engaged three times.
