Life and career
Brewer grew up loving all aspects of the performing arts, especially movies and theater productions. During her middle school years, she began taking theater classes at a College for Kids class in 1999. During her Dionysus Theater training, she appeared in dramas, musicals, comedies, and several improvisations. Brewer appeared and spoke in PSAs for the Super Bowl of Caring Houston Food Drive in Houston, Texas, for two years, with NBC, ABC, and CBS broadcasting. Brewer's stage experience continues through The Groundlings Theatre and School.
In 2011, Brewer made her television debut as Adelaide "Addie" Langdon in American Horror Story: Murder House. "I first heard of the audition from a friend of mine." She said, "Italian people are always talking about her." "They were looking for a young lady with Down syndrome who might act." My headshot and resume were submitted, and I was called for an audition, and to my surprise, I was accepted. "I was so excited" when I first heard this. "Adelaide is a complex character, but the most difficult part of playing Adelaide is learning how to portray someone who isn't always seen as acceptable to her mother and society." This is a new challenge for me.
She appeared in an episode titled "Heat" on Southland after the show's first season ended, and it aired on February 20, 2013. Also in 2013, she appeared in American Horror Story, subtitled Coven, as Nan, a young witch who is clairvoyant.
Brewer would reprise the show for the fourth season of the American Horror Story: Freak Exhibition, as announced at PaleyFest 2014. However, show producer Ryan Murphy said Brewer would not appear during the season, but at a later date. After appearing in a promo for the remaining two episodes, Brewer was later revealed. Marjorie, the ventriloquist's dummy of another fictional character, was both voiced and performed by the actress.
Brewer became the first woman with Down syndrome to walk the red carpet at New York Fashion Week in February 2015, the same woman with Down syndrome did for designer Carrie Hammer. "It's amazing" that the fashion industry is including people with disabilities, Brewer said, "It's amazing that the fashion industry is including people with disabilities." "It's an amazing opportunity for both women and men who are disabled," the woman says. "Young girls and even young women [see me] and then say, 'hey, if she can do it, why can't she?" says the author. It's a true inspiration for any young women to [encourage them] in being who they are and expressing who they are."
In July 2015, she appeared as Jamie in three episodes of Raymond & Lane's Web series Raymond & Lane, while in September, Brewer appeared on Switched at Birth as a "Between hope and fear." She revealed her award as a recipient of the Quincy Jones Exceptional Advocacy Award by the Global Down Syndrome Foundation next month. Brewer was asked if she would appear in American Horror Story's forthcoming fifth season, subtitled Hotel, in the same month. "Maybe." She replied, "Maybe." I'm not positive, but it's likely that it depends. I really want to be" in the United States. However, she did not appear in the season.
Brewer appeared in Whitney's Wedding, a comedy short film in which she played a bride who isn't 'cold-feet' when she first noticed that her fiancé isn't "normal." Miley Cyrus, an American singer, begged Brewer to introduce her at the Variety Power of Women festival, where Cyrus was given an award from the Happy Hippie Foundation in October. The non-profit foundation in Cyrus focuses on youth (particularly among LGBTQ youth), the LGBTQ community, and other vulnerable groups. During her acceptance address, Cyrus said, "We've never met in person before today, but I'm a big fan of Jamie's." On its seventh season Cult, Brewer beautifully represented the Happy Hippie Foundation and all we represent." She portrayed Hedda, a member of the original 'SCUM' crew, led by feminist Valerie Solanas in the seventh episode of the season. Brewer appeared in Bridget Everett's Love You More, a pilot film for Amazon Video that was later not seen.
Brewer made her off-Broadway debut in Amy and the Orphanage, a Lindsey Ferrentino play about three siblings, one of whom has Down syndrome, in the aftermath of their father's death. She was the first woman with Down syndrome to appear in an Off-Broadway play. Brewer was selected as an Outstanding Featured Actress in a Play by the Outer Critics Circle Awards in April for her role in Amy and the Orphanage. She received the Drama Desk Award in June of the same year for her appearance in a Play. Gina was cast in the independent drama film Turnover shortly thereafter.
Brewer appeared on American Horror Story for the second time during October, as she reprised the role she played in Coven. Hardcore supporters applauded Brewer's return as Nan. Brewer's return was "short but sweet," according to Katie Louise-Smith of PopBuzz, who called him "brilliant." Den of Geek's Ron Hogan expressed delight at Brewer's return, saying her return was "handled well." However, Entertainment Weekly's Kat Rosenfield slammed Nan's scene, saying it "serves mainly as a fan service." Brewer appeared in the tenth and final episode of the season for a brief period.
