Aja Naomi King (born January 11, 1985) is an American actress.

She began her career in guest-starring roles on television, and starred as Cassandra Kopelson in the The CW medical comedy-drama Emily Owens, M.D.. In 2014, King began starring as Michaela Pratt in the ABC legal drama series How to Get Away with Murder, for which she received NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series nomination in 2015.

She also has starred in the films Four (2012) and Reversion (2015).

In 2016, she portrayed Cherry Turner in the historical film The Birth of a Nation.

Early life

King was born in Los Angeles and grew up in Walnut, California. She received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Acting from the University of California, Santa Barbara, and a Master of Fine Arts from Yale University's School of Drama in 2010. At Yale University, King performed in a number of productions, including A Midsummer Night's Dream, Little Shop of Horrors, and Angels in America: A Gay Fantasia on National Themes.

Personal life

In March 2021, she announced that she was pregnant after previously experiencing two miscarriages. On June 6, 2021, she announced that she had given birth to a son, Kian, with husband Dan King.

King was the face of skincare line Olay's fall 2015 advertising campaign. She became a spokesperson for L'Oreal Paris in 2017. King has graced the covers of numerous magazines, including Vanity Fair, Elle, Marie Claire, Nylon, Glamour, Essence, Entertainment Weekly and Shape.

Career

During her early years of her career, the King appeared in several short films. She made her television debut in 2010 as a guest star on CBS's Police procedural Blue Bloods, as a guest star on Person of Concern, The Blacklist, and Deadbeat. She made her debut in the 2011 independent film Damsels in Distress as a minor protagonist. Cassandra Kopelson, the series's main antagonist on CW medical comedy-drama series Emily Owens, M.D., made her big break in 2012, when she was cast as the series's main antagonist. After a single season in 2013, the series was cancelled. She appeared in The Onion Presents: The News Later, she appeared in the Amazon Studios comedy pilot The Onion Presents.

King co-starred in two independent films in 2013. In the independent drama Four, she played Abigayle, the daughter of Wendell Pierce's character. For her part in this film, she and her co-star received the Los Angeles Film Festival Award for Best Performance by Cast. In the film 36 Saints, she appeared alongside Laverne Cox and Britne Oldford. She appeared in the romantic comedy The Rewrite in 2014, starring Hugh Grant and Marisa Tomei. The film was shot in 2013 but it was unveiled in the United States in 2015.

King appeared in ABC medical drama series Black Box, starring Kelly Reilly in early 2014. After a single season, the series was cancelled. She was one of the main characters in Shonda Rhimes' ABC legal drama How to Get Away with Murder in February 2014. Annalise Keating plays Viola Davis as a law professor on the series Annalise Keating. Michaela Pratt, one of the five leading students, appears alongside Alfred Enoch, Jack Falahee, Matt McGorry, and Karla Souza. The series premiered on September 25, 2014 with generally positive reviews from critics and 14 million viewers. For her role in series, King received her first NAACP Image Award nomination.

King appeared in the science-fiction thriller Reversion for the first time in 2015. On October 9, 2015, there was only limited theatrical screening. She was also portrayed as the female lead in the historical drama film The Birth of a Nation, based on Nat Turner's account of the 1831 slave revolt. Nate Parker, Aunjanue Ellis, Gabrielle Union, and Armie Hammer appear in the film. Cherry, Nat Turner's wife, appeared on Nat Turner's wife. On January 25, 2016, the film premiered at the 2016 Sundance Film Festival in competition, garnering rave reviews from critics. The King's appearance was also well-received. In Nate Parker's festival hit, Variety selected her as one of "The Biggest Breakthrough Performances" at Sundance, describing how "King transforms herself from modern glamour girl to 19th-century slave." The King has also been named as a potential nominee for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress, but he did not receive a nomination. In a Motion Picture nomination, she was given a NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress. At the 10th annual Essence Black Women In Hollywood gala in February 2017, she received the "Rising Star Award" for her 10th appearance.

In The Upside, a remake of the 2011 French film The Intouchables, King appeared opposite Kevin Hart, Bryan Cranston, and Nicole Kidman. She appeared in the lead role of Somali activist Ifrah Ahmed in Mogadishu's biopic A Girl. She appeared in Sylvie's Love, opposite Tessa Thompson and Nnamdi Asomugha, in 2020. In a historic drama film The 24th about the 1917 Houston riot directed by Kevin Willmott, the King later played a female leading role. In Shriver, the King will appear opposite Michael Shannon. In his debut film directorial debut, the Knife, she appeared alongside Nnamdi Asomugha.
