Since being an intern on CollegeHumor in 2006, he has written and appeared in original videos for the website, as well as contributing papers that have been published both online and print.

In addition, he appeared in The CollegeHumor Show, an MTV sitcom that ran for one season in 2009.

Hurwitz has produced Myspace's BFF series outside of CollegeHumor. He is best known as Amir Blumenfeld's comedic partner, with Hurwitz mostly portraying the straight man.

The pair's hobby turned into a CollegeHumor product.

Only on Vimeo. Beginning in April 2016, they announced the streaming of their latest video series Lonely and Horny.

Both of them have hosted several live shows and launched If I Were You in 2013.

Hurwitz and Blumenfeld co-created HeadGum, a comedy podcast network founded in August 1, 2015. Marty Michael joined Hurwitz and Blumenfeld on August 1, 2015.

Jake Hurwitz Career

Career

Hurwitz has cited television series Arrested Development and comedian Mitch Hedberg as major influences on his comedy style.

Hurwitz began writing a column for CollegeHumor in 2005 while attending school. When he transferred to Hunter College, he recalled his responsibilities, saying, "I put together desks and microwaved." He began working full time at CollegeHumor, where he wrote and appeared in original films. He aspired to be a sitcom writer but now he "love[s] it."

Hurwitz was a cast member of The CollegeHumor Show, a 2009 sitcom set in the CollegeHumor offices and containing videos from the website. "Jake may not be more intelligent than his coworkers, but he's more attractive, which is good enough for him." The show got mixed feedback. Dustin Rowles of Pajiba described it as "a series of terrible sketches strung together," while Liz Shannon Miller, editor of online streaming site Newtee, criticized the show's sitcom style and wrote that she "would have liked a better debut" but gave the premiere four actors out of a possible five. Hurwitz wrote, "We're off the air for a second season."

Hurwitz was chosen as the host of the second season of BFF, a game show that Hurwitz characterized as "The Dating Game for Friends" in 2009. This was the first time he had been hired to appear in a non-CollegeHumor film; he said, "it's the first time I've been asked on the shoulder to do something that wasn't frat boy parody" and that the show's style was "out of [his] wheelhouse." Hurwitz was given the opportunity to film a Jake and Amir video on the set, which he said "turned out really well." "It's a shame to see the typically cliche Hurwitz stripped of any real comedy intention and thrust into what is essentially a young, fashion-loving woman's chitchat," Tubefilter's Marc Hustvedt said of the season. Although some episodes of the season appeared to have been watched over 500,000 times, Hustvedt said that many of them seemed to have arisen from embedded video advertisements and doubted the veracity of this number.

Hurwitz began his undergraduate work at CollegeHumor in 2006. The two executives were seated across from each other as their Union Square offices were moved to Union Square. Hurwitz' father received a digital camera for his birthday, and the two used it to make videos together that were posted on the video sharing site Vimeo. "Amir and I were always joking around in different, strange characters, so it seemed only that once we had a camera we started to film it." Their first film, "Quick Characters," was unscripted, and involved either Hurwitz or Blumenfeld pointing a camera at the other and instructing them to act in a specific way.

Hurwitz plays Jake, a "normal guy," in it, and Blumenfeld plays Amir, his nessive and devoted co-worker who adores Jake's attention.

Hurwitz summed up the writing process by saying that "me and Amir laugh for an hour or two and then we leave with a script." He also stated that the series's increased production values, saying that he and Blumenfeld have become more adept at editing scripts over time. Hurwitz wrote about how his character has evolved, "I think the Jake character has become a little more wacky," Hurwitz said. "I've been given triggers for my insecurity, and then I'm going to be a little crazy, which is awesome." "When we're writing together we do each other's voices occasionally," the characters' roles had changed somewhat, and he said, "we're just making us laugh a lot when we're doing the crazy/funny guy and he was doing the straight man when it came to fashion and girls."

Hurwitz and Blumenfeld unveiled their first new venture since Jake and Amir: If I Were You, a comedy audio podcast in which they give listeners tips. Kayla Culver of The Concordian praised the podcast as "comfortable to watch" and "truly funny," and "it's like listening to two of your closest friends having a joking session on the couch next to you." Miranda Sawyer of The Guardian characterized If I Were You as "a typical example of a comedy podcast" and "amiable enough," but "too much joking," adding that "New Yorkers Jake and Amir's laughter and merriment with the occasional amusing line" would be "serious enough."

On Vimeo, Hurwitz and Blumenfeld created Lonely and Horny, an on-demand comedy film. For its second season, CollegeHumor picked up the series for its second season.

The pair formed the HeadGum podcasting network in 2015, after the success of Hurwitz and Blumenfeld's If I Were You podcast, along with their friend and colleague Marty Michael. HeadGum currently hosts 42 podcasts, many of which are hosted by comedians who were involved in CollegeHumor. Among the many popular programs on the network are Why Won't You Date Me?, Gilmore Guys, and Doughboys. If I Were You and Not Another D&D Podcast, both of which feature Hurwitz as a co-host, are also on the network.

Jake Hurwitz, Emily Axford, and Caldwell Tanner appeared on Not Another D&D Podcast in 2018. The Dungeons and Dragons-themed podcast launched its 100th and final episode of its first main campaign on May 9, 2020, with plans to launch their second campaign later this year. Hurwitz played Hardwon Surefoot, a human warrior, in the first major campaign. Hardwon was raised in a "dwarfanage." Hardwon is often referred to by his full name: "Hardwon Surefoot, Bastard of the Mountains, Pride of the Dwarfanage" (and on rare occasions, Thick of Calf and Quad, Dug deeper into Iron Deep than any man or dwarf before him, Dragon Slayer, the Oft Dead), can be added. Hurwitz played Jveliin, a dwarven Path of the Zealot barbarian, in episodes 62-65. Trinyvale, DMed by Caldwell Tanner, Jake plays Nyack, a half-elf ranger who aspires to be the silverback of his gorilla tribe. Jens Lyndelle, his half-brother, has referred to him as a half-stranger. Jake played Henry "Hank" Hogfish, a feared human echo knight warrior in the second season. Jake is a half-boss Calder Kildae, a half-giant Eldritch Knight from Bahumia's frozen north.
