John James Bannon (June 14, 1940-2010) was an American television and stage actor known as Jack Bannon.

He was best known for his role as Art Donovan on Lou Grant, a role he played for the entire series from 1977 to 1982.

Early life

Bannon was born in Los Angeles, California, on June 14, 1940. Jim Bannon and Bea Benaderet were his parents. In 1963, he graduated from the University of California, Santa Barbara.

Career

Bannon, a 24-year-old boy, began working as a dialogue coach on Petticoat Junction, the sitcom on which his mother appeared. Roger, Bobbie Joe's date, appeared in the Season 1 episode "Kate's Recipe for Hot Rhubarb" of the series in 1963. In 1969, Bannon appeared on Petticoat Junction again (after his mother died in 1968) as Buck in the episode "One of Our Chickens Is Missing."

Buck Williams was portrayed by Bannon in the drama Trauma Center (1983). He appeared in other television series of the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s, including The Beverly Hillbillies, Green Acres, Daniel Boone, Kojak, The Rockford Files, Charlie's Angels, and Simon & Simon.

Art Donovan on Lou Grant was Bannon's most well-known role. The character in The Hollywood Reporter portrayed him as a "amiable assistant editor" of the fictional Los Angeles Tribune newspaper. In all 114 episodes of the series, the actor appeared in all of them.

What Ever Happened to Aunt Alice, the actor's film career included. (1969) Little Big Man (1970), and the Death Warrant (1990) He appeared on stage for 20 years in the Coeur d'Alene Summer Theatre Company.
