Mike Reid Career

Career

Reid's first act in comedy was as a stand-up comedian in bars and aboard cruise liners in the early 1960s. He was then banned from serving in uncredited television series such as Doctor Who (in the story "The War Machines) The Saint and Department S. He was dismissed from serving as Roger Moore's underwater stunt double in The Saint after attracting notice to Moore's thinning hair. He also appeared as a stuntman in films including Casino Royale (1967) and The Dirty Dozen (1967).

He then became one of the original stars of The Comedians, a popular TV show produced by Johnnie Hamp for the Manchester-based Granada Television, which consisted solely of short slots by mature comedians. Reid stood out, being the only obviously London comedian in a line-up. Reid's most popular catchphrases included "Terrific" (pronounced with emphasis on each syllable), "Get It In" and "Move Yer Arris," among other things.

With a one-off hit record, he capitalized on his initial success with a one-off hit record, a rare copy of The Ugly Duckling on Pye records. It debuted at number ten on the UK singles chart in 1975, where it reached the top of the charts. He appeared on television as the host of the children's TV quiz show Runaround in 1975. In 1981, the runaround was discontinued.

Frank Butcher, a 1989 graduate of the Royal Academy of Television Andchers, rose to fame as a performer, for which he regained a lot of attention over the years. He first appeared in September of that year as a semi-regular character, but became a full cast member as his character became the Queen Vic pub's landlord, purchasing it from Den Watts (Leslie Grantham). Reid's public image as being skeptical that he loved doing what he did not like doing, for example in television commercials for the soft drink Oasis. His character was interwoven in a multitude of popular storylines over the years, and the most notable of these talelines was his character's long-term friendship with Pat Wicks (played by Pam St. Clement) and later his brief marriage to Peggy Mitchell (played by Barbara Windsor).

Reid took a long time off the program in April 1994, by which time the Frank Butcher storyline was one of the most popular on British television, due to the show's anxieties. In his classic adult pantomime Pussy in Boots, a spin-off of Puss in Boots, where Reid appeared in the main role of 'Big Dick' later this year. He also did voiceover for one of the cows in the Anchor butter advertisements in 1994. "Anchor: Never Seen Anything Like It" was the commercial.

On Christmas Day 1995, the return to EastEnders was broadcast. He was first introduced as a recurring character on the show, and after a few brief stints, he returned as a full-time character in May 1998. Over the next two years, his character appeared in several major newspaper stories. Reid was suffering from heart disease at the start of 2000. In May 2000, he announced that he would be leaving the soap for good due to exhaustion from the long filming schedules. He was persuaded to stay on the show for a further five months to give his appearance a dramatic ending. He departed on November 2nd, 2000, shortly after his ex-wife Pat Evans' affair with ex-wife Pat Evans was revealed by his new wife Peggy Mitchell. Doug "The Head" Denovitz, a crooked diamond trader who appeared in the popular British gangster film Snatch, appeared in 2000. He went on to appear in several low-budget British films over the next two years, including Hey Mr DJ (2005), Moussakka and Chips (2005), as well as a Spanish film titled Oh Marbella (2003).

BBC bosses advised him not to return to the show just after his expulsion from EastEnders.

In late January 2002, he appeared in three episodes shot in Spain, followed by a spin-off special episode titled "Persecutors" in 2003 and his final appearance in EastEnders in late 2005. In early 2006, he appeared on The Paul O'Grady Show, announcing that he had no concern in any future re-appearances in EastEnders, and later that year, he turned down another bid to return to the series.

By this time, he had been semi-retired from show business and was living in a villa in Spain. He returned to acting in early 2007, appearing in two episodes of the long-running ITV police drama series The Bill, in which he played corrupt businessman Brian Stevens. This was his last television appearance at that time, though he had produced The Baron, an ITV reality series that had been canceled; the network was undecided as to whether it would be broadcast, but the show began on April 24, 2008. After the departure of fellow contestant Malcolm McLaren, Reid was the eventual winner, taking on Suzanne Shaw. Reid was also granted the title Baron of Troup, a legitimate and hereditary barony, but one that conveys no power beyond the name's use. Reid had completed filming as a gangster in Jack Says four days before his death. On September 22, 2008, the film was released on DVD. In Jack Said's graphic novel prequel, his character, "The Guv'nor," appears as well.

Reid appeared at several venues throughout his career, but only a handful of shows were recorded for broadcast on VHS or DVD.
