Ivar Antonsen Career

Career

Antonsen began playing the accordion and organ, influenced by jazz musician Art van Damme. He got in touch with bassist Bjrn Alterhaug, and the two formed their first jazz band together in Mo i Rana. He moved to Oslo, studied modern composition at Norges Musikkhgskole under Finn Mortensen, and came in contact with major jazz artists. All along, he was inspired by Johann Sebastian Bach's piano music, as well as composer and composer.

Espen Rud (drums) and later on, Terje Venaas, Sture Janson, and Bjrn Alterhaug on bass formed the Ivar Antonsen Trio in the late 1960s. Antonsen's sophisticated style can be cited in his contribution to guitarist Thorgeir Stub's album Flight (1985) as a prime example of his style. Here's a great performance with Thorgeir Stub (drums), Krister Andersson (tenor saxophone), Jesper Lundgaard (double bass).

Antonsen was principal of the "Troms' Musikkskole" (1975–1977) and later, "Buskerud Musikkonservatorium." In 1985, then moved to San Diego, California, where he was a music educator and later professor of Music at California State University (1995–2004). He has been a Lecturer at Norges Musikkhrgskole since 2004. Antonsen lived in San Diego for 19 years, including with Ravi Shankar's tabla player Abhiman Kaushal, drummer Duncan Moore, guitarist Peter Sprague, bassist Bob Magnusson, and pianist Andy Laverne on his album Dream Come True (2000).

Antonsen's compositions often have strong rhythmic patterns, musically advanced and melodically complex, but also logical. Modern jazz, as well as contemporary classical music, are among his works. He is well-known among European and American musicians, and he has performed with jazz legends including Jon Christensen, Palle Danielsson, John Surman, Arild Andersen, Ben Webster, Jimmy Heath, Slide Hampton, Art Farmer, and Karin Krog. He formed his own quartet in 2004, with Espen Rud, Knut Riisn's, and Terje Gewelt, and later appeared in many other quartets with saxophone players such as Frode Nymo, Atle Nymo, and Morten Halle, as well as guitarist Hallgeir Pedersen.

Antonsen is one of Norway's top jazz pianists, and he appears in a neo-bop style. His playing has a strong identity and is characterized by his sensitivity, great imagination, complex harmony/rhythm, and a modern technology.
