Irfan Fandi Career

Club career

Irfan started his career by enrolling in the National Football Academy's youth program (NFA).

Irfan had the opportunity to secure his first overseas stint in March 2013, which was supposed to be with Hércules, a second-tier Spanish professional club. However, he was unable to secure a deal with the club due to visa issues. He joined A.C. Barnechea in Chile later this year, completing a two-year deal with the Chilean Primera División club.

Irfan joined Universidad Católica in 2014 and made his first team debut the following year, starting from the bench for the club's senior team in the 81st minute against San Luis de Quillota. Despite this, Irfan completed a two-year deal with the club in order to return to Singapore and fulfill his National Service duties.

Irfan will join the Young Lions in S.League for the 2015 S.League season on a six-month deal, according to the team on March 5, 2015. Due to an injury sustained by Shakir Hamzah, he was immediately included in the starting line-up against Tampines Rovers on the same day.

Irfan and his brother, Ikhsan, joined Home United for the forthcoming 2016 S.League season in January 2016. After being out for the bulk of the season due to National Service commitments, he scored a brace against Balestier Khalsa in his second start of the season.

Puma announced on March 14 that they had signed Irfan on a two-year sponsorship contract. Following the completion of his national service, Irfan's former club, Deportivo Universidad Católica, was also interested in re-signing him.

In a 0–2 win over Hougang United, Irfan's first goal at the continental level was scored in the 24th minute against Yadanarbon F.C., his first goal for the 2017 S.League season. In an eventual 4–1 victory, the team won by a 3–0 margin. Home United became the first team to advance to the zonal semi-finals after winning. Irfan was later nominated for the Young Player of the Season award in the S.League. His performances also attracted the attention of Thailand's BG Pathum United, which he would eventually sign for, and he was also given a trial with English side Leeds United in December 2017.

After his national service for the 2018 Singapore Premier League season, Irfan rejoined the Young Lions.

Irfan and his brother, Ikhsan, began testing at Groningen's Evolving Club in February 2018. He appeared on another trial with Portuguese top-tier side S.C. Braga and was later offered a two-year contract, with the club maintaining the option to prolong the contract by two years. During his brief stint with the club, Irfan turned down the bid, citing feelings of loneliness and homesick. He also stated that if he wanted to leave the club during the deal, he would fork out a hefty compensation of 15 million euros if he did not accept it. Irfan later rejoined the Young Lions and finished the season with 22 appearances and 3 goals.

Irfan will join BG Pathum United in the 2019 Thai League 2 season on November 11, 2018. Despite his relegation, Irfan accepted a bid for two years because the Thai side had been keen on signing him. He helped BG Pathum gain promotion back to the Thai League in his first season. When BG Pathum trailed Muangthong United 1–0, Irfan was suspended in the first half of his first top-flight game in Thailand. The club eventually won the game 2–1.

Irfan became the first Singaporean to win the Thai League 1 title after his club swooned a huge 19-point lead over second-placed Buriram United, which has six games remaining. The defense won with only 11 goals in 24 games, while keeping 15 clean sheets, with Irfan leading the defense only conceded 11 goals in 24 games.

Irfan lifted his fourth silverware with BG Pathum in a 3-2 victory over Buriram in the 2022 Thailand Champions Cup.

International career

In the 25th edition of the Canon Lion City Cup, Irfan was part of the Singapore U16 team, winning over Arsenal U15 and Eintracht Frankfurt U15. On February 14, 2015, he made his Singapore U23 debut against the Japan U22s, and coach Aide Iskandar selected him for the 2015 Southeast Asian Games.

Irfan was called up by national team coach V. Sundramoorthy for the friendlies against Malaysia and Hong Kong on October 7th and 11th respectively in September. At the Mongkok Stadium, he made his senior national team debut against Hong Kong. He earned his second cap in a friendly against Afghanistan before making his first appearance against Bahrain in Singapore's first third-round match of the 2019 AFC Asian Cup qualification, helping the Lions secure a 0-0 away draw.

Irfan was chosen to compete in The Sultan of Selangor's Cup, which will be held on May 6, 2017. He made his AFF Championship debut in the 2018 season on November 9th, defeating Indonesia 1–0.

Irfan was called up to the national team for a friendly against Afghanistan and the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualification matches in Riyadh against Palestine, Uzbekistan, and Saudi Arabia, as well as brothers Ikhsan and Ilhan. This was the first time any of the three brothers of the three brothers were called up.

Irfan was controversially dismissed in the 67th minute after allegedly refusing a goalscoring opportunity in the second leg of the 2020 AFF Championship semi-final match against Indonesia on December 25.

Irfan and his younger brothers Ikhsan and Ilhan appeared against Malaysia on March 26, 2022. It was the first time that the three Fandi brothers competed in a joint match for the national team together. It was also the first time in Singapore's history that three brothers were playing for the national team. Thanks to the Singapore team's younger brother Ikhsan's brace, they were able to win 2–1.
