Iñigo Martínez Career

Club career

Martnez, a native of Ondarroa, Biscay, joined Real Sociedad's youth team from local CD Aurrerá Ondarroa. He made his senior debut in the 2009–10 season, assisting the reserves in the promotion from the fourth division after one year out by playing 23 games and one goal.

Martnez made his first-team (and La Liga) debut with the Basques on August 27, 2011, playing the full 90 minutes against Sporting de Gijón. In an eventual 2–1 home loss to Athletic Bilbao in a derby on October 2nd, he scored his first league goal from inside his own half.

Martnez scored his third league goal in the same style in a 3–2 victory over Real Betis on November 27, 2011 (in the 90th minute). He continued to be the first choice in the following top-flight seasons, including assisting the club in its return to the UEFA Champions League after ten years in 2012-13 by netting four times in 34 matches.

Martnez signed a new five-year contract on April 26, 2016.

Martnez signed with Athletic Bilbao for €32 million (his contractual buyout amount and a record outlay for the buying club) until 2023; the fee was around half of what was paid on the day by the player he acquired in the Athletic squad, Aymeric Laporte, who had migrated to Manchester City. He made his debut on February 4th and was playing the entire game against Girona FC in the domestic league.

Martnez conceded two penalties for foul play in two local derby matches in the domestic league, the first in a 3–1 home loss to his old club Real Sociedad and the second in a 1–1 away draw against SD Eibar.

Martnez scored his first goal for Athletic (in his 85th competitive appearance) in a home league match against Betis on June 20. He later gave up a penalty, but the kick was blocked and the game was still dead, and he was the match's only goal.

Martnez was close to scoring with a long-range shot in the first half but then forfeited a penalty for a foul on Portu ten minutes later. He was sent off by the referee, but another VAR check determined that he had not denied a goalscoring opportunity intentionally, and the red card was downgraded to yellow. Real took the trophy with a 1–0 scoreline. He was seen in the aftermath of his many old colleagues and was lauded in the media for his sportsmanship.

International career

Martnez made his Spain under-21 debut in 2011. He was chosen by Luis Milla for his squad's participation in the 2012 Summer Olympics in London in the following year. In the first game against Japan, he was sent late in the first half for bringing down Kensuke Nagai, effectively ending a clear goalscoring opportunity.

Martnez made his first appearance with the full team on August 14, 2013 when he was introduced as a second-half replacement for Sergio Ramos in a 2–0 friendly win over Ecuador. He earned 11 caps between September 2018 and March 2021, including seven in the starting lineup; however, he was not selected in Luis Enrique's 24-man squad for the UEFA Euro 2020 tournament (delayed for a year by the COVID-19 pandemic in Europe); nevertheless, he was not included in the player's 24-man squad for the UEFA Euro 2020 tournament, with the player claiming that he was not entirely happy with his physical health after missing despite being despite being he was in September 2018 and despite being he was announced on May 2021

Martnez scored his first goal, a last-minute header, in the UEFA Nations League's 22-2 away draw with the Czech Republic on June 5, 2022.

After making a preliminary 55-man list, Gerard Pique 'is a surprise contender for Spain's World Cup squad.'

www.dailymail.co.uk, October 31, 2022
Since stepping down from international service following the 2018 World Cup, the center back (left), 35, has ranked fifth with his club Barcelona (right) and hasn't played for his country. Pique has been named in Spain's wider preliminary squad by La Roja boss Luis Enrique (inset top) for the Qatar tournament, which will begin in three weeks, according to Spanish outlet Sport. Given that the veteran has not applied for Spain selection since deciding against it four years ago, it's surprising. The likes of Aymeric Laporte, Irgo Martnez, Pau Torres, Garca, Diego Llorente, Cesar Azpilicueta, Hugo Guillamón, and Sergio Ramos are particularly strong, with the latter being the first surprise inclusion on the list.
