He ranked fourth in scoring, 15th in rebounds, 10th in field goal and free throw percentage, and first in steals (seventh in the nation). He was named on the All-ACC second team and was a member of the conference's all-defensive squad. He also holds the Georgia Tech record for steals per game.

Shumpert announced for the NBA draft on March 28, 2011, foregoing his final year of college eligibility.

NBA career

Shumpert was drafted with the New York Knicks' 17th overall pick in the 2011 NBA draft. "He's about as good an on-ball defender as there is in the league right now," Jared Jeffries, then teammates', said in February 2012. Shumpert had been selected to participate in the 2012 NBA All-Star Weekend Slam Dunk Contest, but he was unable to participate due to a knee injury.

Shumpert sustained a knee injury while dribbling in midcourt on April 28, 2012, and was immediately dismissed from the court. Shumpert tore the ACL and meniscus in his left knee and will miss the remainder of the season, according to an MRI.

In the 2012 NBA Rookie of the Year poll, Shumpert came in 5th place. From a ballot that was overwhelmingly populated by 120 writers and broadcasters from around the country, he received 33 total votes and one first-place vote. He was also the youngest rookie to be nominated for the Defensive Player of the Year award.

Shumpert was medically cleared to participate in team practice on January 13, 2013. In a match against the Detroit Pistons at The O2 Arena in London, he made his season debut on January 17. He went on to score 8 points, 3 rebounds, one assist, one steal, and one block.

Shumpert was traded from the Cleveland Cavaliers to the Cleveland Cavaliers in a three-team trade that also included the Oklahoma City Thunder on January 5, 2015. The Thunder selected Shumpert and J. R. Smith from the Cleveland Knicks as the first round pick in the 2015 NBA draft, while the Thunder sent Dion Waiters to Oklahoma City and Lou Amundson, Alex Kirk, and a second round pick in the 2019 NBA draft, while the Thunder sent Lance Thomas to the Knicks. In the 129-90 victory over the Charlotte Hornets, he made his Cavaliers debut on January 23, scoring 8 points, 2 rebounds, and 2 assists. The Cavaliers made it to the NBA Finals in 2015, but they lost in six games to the Golden State Warriors.

Shumpert re-signed with the Cavaliers on July 9, 2015, a four-year, $40 million deal. He was out for three months after suffering a ruptured Extensor Carpi Ulnaris sheath in his right wrist on September 29, 2015. In a 111-76 victory, he made his season debut against the Orlando Magic on December 11, scoring 14 points off the bench. In a 120-103 victory over the Boston Celtics on March 5, 2016, he had 12 points and a career-high 16 rebounds off the bench. Since releasing his left knee drained, he was ruled out for the Cavaliers' final two games of the regular season on April 11. Shumpert returned in time for the playoffs and helped the Cavaliers make it to the NBA Finals for the second straight season. The Golden State Warriors will meet the Cavaliers once more. Despite going down 3–1 in the series following a Game 4 setback, the Cavaliers went on to win the series in seven games to become the first team in NBA history to win the championship after being down 3–1.

Tyronn Lue, the Cavaliers' coach, started using Shumpert as a backup point guard early in the 2016–17 season. In a 128-96 win over the Detroit Pistons on March 14, 2017, he scored a season-high 18 points. Shumpert led the Cavaliers to a third straight season after going 12–1 over the first three rounds of the playoffs. The Cavaliers met the Golden State Warriors in a five-game match, but the Warriors lost the series in five games.

Shumpert's left knee surgery left him out for six to eight weeks, and he was ruled out for six to eight weeks. He returned to action against the San Antonio Spurs on January 23, 2018.

Shumpert was drafted by the Sacramento Kings from the Cavaliers on February 8, 2018 as part of a three-team trade that also included the Utah Jazz. Shumpert signed with the Brooklyn Nets on November 13, 2019, marking a roster exception for Wilson Chandler as a result of the 25-game performance-enhancing drug (PED) suspension. Shumpert was waived by the Nets on December 12, when Chandler's suspension came to an end.

Shumpert signed a 2021 contract to return to Brooklyn on January 30, 2021. He was dismissed on February 23 and then re-signed to a 10-day deal on February 26. On the expiration of the 10-day deal, he parted ways with the Nets. In that period, he appeared in two Nets games.
