Gorgui Sy Dieng (GOR-ghee Jeng, 1990) is a Senegalese professional basketball player for the Minnesota Timberwolves of the National Basketball Association (NBA).

Personal life

Dieng is best known for his philanthropic works. In 2015, he founded the Gorgui Dieng Foundation, which has provided medical equipment and supplies to enhance healthcare in his native Senegal. In 2019, he was the third recipient to receive the Offseason NBA Cares Community Assist Award. Dieng is a observant Muslim.

High school career

Dieng attended the Sports for Education and Economic Growth (SEEDS) Academy in Thiès, Senegal. Dieng had a 3.2 GPA when he attended SEEDS.

In 2009, he was admitted to the "Basketball Without Borders" camp in South Africa as one of 60 promising players selected from around Africa and named MVP of the camp.

Dieng transferred to Huntington Prep, West Virginia, for the 2009–10 school year, where he worked for coach Rob Fulford. During his senior season at Huntington Prep, he averaged 15.4 points, 12.6 rebounds, and 7.2 blocks per game.

Dieng was recruited by Marquette, Marshall, Colorado, and Louisville, among others who came in late. "Academics are no question," Rob Fulford, his high school coach, said. He passed the SAT six months after learning English and passed with 400 points to spare. Louisville and Marshall had the most attention. When he first arrived in Louisville, the NCAA ruled him ineligible, prompting them to hold him out of practice and individual workouts. Professional career

Dieng was selected by the Utah Jazz with the 21st overall pick in the 2013 NBA draft, and the Minnesota Timberwolves and Shabazz Muhammad followed him to the Minnesota Timberwolves later that night in exchange for Trey Burke's 9th pick Trey Burke. Dieng scored 22 points and 21 rebounds in a game against the Houston Rockets on March 20, 2014, the first ever 20-20 game by a rookie in Timberwolves' franchise history. He was also the sixth player since the NBA started tracking in 1970 and had at least 20 points and 20 rebounds within their first three careers. Dieng scored the game-winning basket with 4.6 seconds remaining on April 11, again against the Rockets, finishing with 12 points and 20 rebounds. Dieng was selected to the NBA All-Rookie second team as a result of his play in the second half of the season.

Dieng reached a career low of 22 points in a loss to the Denver Nuggets on January 12, 2015. He was selected as a representative of Team World in the 2015 Rising Stars Challenge on January 28, 2015.

Dieng was drafted by the Memphis Grizzlies on February 6, 2020, as part of a three-team trade that also involved the Miami Heat. Justise Winslow and Dion Waiters were also acquired by the Grizzlies, who were later waived. While the Timberwolves acquired James Johnson, the Heat acquired Andre Irmodala, Solomon Hill, and Jae Crowder.

Dieng and the Grizzlies reached a labor buyout deal on March 26, 2021.

Dieng, a 2021 native of San Antonio, was signed to the San Antonio Spurs on March 29, 2021. In 16 games played off the bench for the Spurs, he averaged 5.3 PPG, 2.6 RPG, and 1.2 APG.

Dieng signed a one-year, $4 million deal with the Atlanta Hawks on August 9, 2021.
