Ilan Mitchell-Smith (born June 29, 1969) is an American academic and former actor best known as a co-star of the film Weird Science (1985).
Personal life
Mitchell-Smith was born in New York City, New York. His mother, Clary Mitchell-Smith, is a psychotherapist, and his father, Larry Smith, is an art history teacher.
He met Susannah Demaree at Santa Monica College in Santa Monica, California. They were married in 1995. They have two children, born in 1998 and 2000.
Acting career
Mitchell-Smith's first passion was ballet. He studied as an infant and gained a scholarship to dance with the School of American Ballet. Although he was based on his scholarship, he was discovered by a casting director and his film career began in 1982, when he appeared in Sidney Lumet's Daniel as a younger version of the title character. He was in the 1985 teen film Weird Science starring Wyatt Donnelly after a starring role in the 1984 film The Wild Life. The film follows two nerdy teenage boys who make a woman of their own (played by Kelly LeBrock), who are unable to locate girlfriends.
Mitchell-Smith appeared in a number of other films and TV series, most notably The Chocolate War and Superboy, but none of these gave him the same degree of fame. In 1991, he decided to abandon acting entirely, with his last work being a guest appearance on Silk Stalkings. Mitchell-Smith has been doing select voiceover work (recording for two episodes of Fox's "Axe Cop") for two weeks (Moon Warriors" and "Heads Will Roll").
Mitchell-Smith appeared in The Goldbergs' fifth-season premiere in 2017, as playing science teacher Mr. Connelly. The episode, "Weird Science," was based on his film Weird Science, with series actor Barry Goldberg's assertion that he can make a girlfriend in the same way as the movie.
Academic career
Mitchell-Smith obtained his A.B. Medieval Studies from the University of California, Davis (UC Davis), as well as his M.A. Medieval Studies from Fordham University. In 2005, he received a doctoral degree from Texas A&M University. He is an associate professor at California State University, Long Beach, California, and he is an associate professor in the English department. (CSU Long Beach) in Long Beach, California, as of January 2020. He was a professor at Angelo State University in San Angelo, Texas, for many years prior to his appointment to CSU Long Beach.
