Huw Ceredig Jones, born Huw Ceredig Jones on June 22, 1942 – August 11, 2011), was a Welsh television actor best known for his role as Reg Harries in Welsh soap opera Pobol y Cwm.

Early life

Huw Ceredig was born in Brynamman, Carmarthenshire, in 1942, the son of Reverend Gerallt Jones and Elizabeth J. Griffiths, a Welsh tutor. Ceredig was educated at Llandovery College, where one of his teachers was the Welsh rugby player and coach Carwyn James, before moving on to teach at Trinity College in Carmarthen. He was born in Llanuwchllyn and was a member of the illustrious Cilie family of poets. Ceredig was the brother of Welsh politician Alun Ffred Jones, folk musician/politician Dafydd Iwan, and Arthur Morus.

Ceredig re-mortgaged his house to buy instruments for Edward H. Dafis, the current Welsh band, and took them on stage for the first time at the Welsh National Eistedfod in Ruthin in 1973.

He appeared on S4C's long-running soap opera, Pobol y Cwm, from 1974 to 2003. He was part of Reg Harris' long-running soap opera, Pobol y Cwm. In the film Twin Town, he also played Rhys Ifans and Llr Ifans. He has also provided Welsh-language voices for Supersed and, more recently, Meees.

Huw Ceredig Career

Career

He won a scholarship to Llandovery College, where one of his students, Carwyn James, was a Welsh rugby player and coach, before going on to study as a tutor at Trinity University College in Huw's early days. Norah Isaac, the respected Welsh drama professor, ignited his enthusiasm for drama, and when teaching in two schools near Maesteg, near Bridgend, he began acting as an amateur in his spare time, using the stage name Huw Ceredig.

Ceredig was given small roles on Welsh television after being caught in productions at the Swansea Welsh language theatre. In his early 30s, he began teaching at his local primary school in Laleston, near Bridgend, when he decided to become a professional actor. He was introduced to Pobol y Cwm at the outset and has been a popular fixture in the show for almost 30 years. Reg Harries was written out in 2003 after crashing a car, and Ceredig was furious that he was not allowed to stay for another year to complete three decades in the role.

Gareth Wyn Harries, the young actor who later became a film actor, appeared on-screen between 1987 and 1994, including Titanic (1997), Black Hawk Down (2001), Fantastic Four (2005), and Rise of the Silver Surfer (2007). Ceredig's film credits include the 1992 comedy Rebecca's Daughters and the Dylan Thomas biopic The Edge of Love (2008). He appeared as Fatty Lewis in the cult comedy film Twin Town (1997), which started Rhys Ifans' career, and he was also seen in other television roles in Emmerdale, Heartbeat, and Z-Cars.

His voice was familiar to generations of younger viewers through his voiceover work on Welsh television series, including the animation SuperTed and Meees, about a family of multicultural operatic sheep ("meees" being the Welsh word for "baas" in Welsh, as sheep's murmurs are commonly known.

Ceredig, a gregarious man with a rare gift for forging lasting friendships, made him a household name in Wales. As a general fan of sport, his overriding passion was rugby, and he served as chairman of Bridgend Rugby Club for a brief period of time. He was also a fan of Turf and at one point was the part-owner of a racehorse.
