Stephen Macht Life

Stephen Robert Macht (born May 1, 1942) is an American television and film actor.

He is also father of actor Gabriel Macht.

Early life

Macht was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to a Jewish family. He was raised in Brooklyn Heights, New York until, at age nine, his father died and he moved with his mother, Janette, and older brother, to live with his maternal grandfather, a haberdasher, in Mystic, Connecticut.

Personal life

Macht has been married to Suzanne Victoria Pulier, an archivist and museum curator since 1964. They have four children: Julie, Ari Serbin, actor Gabriel and Jesse, a musician. Macht is also an ordained chaplain; and his book Moral Change: a Tragedy or a Return?: How Aristotle’s Tragic Reversal Illuminates Maimonides’ Teshuva was published on Amazon.com in October 2016.

Career

Macht, who appeared at the Stratford Shakespeare Festival in 1975 in Canada, was spotted by a Universal Studios talent scout, and by the mid-1970s, he was no longer teaching and was making regular appearances in television shows and movies.

Yoni Netanyahu, the Israeli officer who was killed in the rescue of hostages in Uganda, was depicted in Raid on Entebbe (1977). In 1978, he was a principal actor in The Immigrants, a syndicated miniseries about the ascension of the son of Italian immigrants in San Francisco's turn-of-the-century.

The success of television movie American Dream (ABC, 1981) culminated in the production of a critically acclaimed short-lived series starring Macht in the role of a suburban man who abandons the suburban life to set up home in Chicago's inner city. He landed the role of Joe Cooper, the brother of Karen MacKenzie (Michele Lee), on Knots Landing in 1982-83. Nancy McKeon's father appeared in Strange Voices (1990). Benedict Arnold, a Benedict Arnold of George Washington (1984), was one of the survivors of an air crash in Flight 90: The Potomac, NBC, 1984). David Keeler, love interest to Cagney (Sharon Gless), on Cagney & Lacey (CBS), spent three seasons (1985-88). During his time on the show, he stepped behind the cameras to make his directorial debut. Macht appeared in "The Siege," an early Season 2 episode of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, in 1993. In Star Trek: The Next Generation, Gene Roddenberry's first attempt to play Captain Jean-Luc Picard, but the role was eventually assigned to Patrick Stewart in 1986.

More recent appearances include playing an Austrian Jew and his daughter in A Friendship (1988) and as a cult member Joan Van Ark's suffering husband in Moment of Truth: A Mother's Deception (1994 NBC). Macht appeared in the 1995 third season of Babylon 5 as the protagonist 'Na'Far'. After Centauri's envasion of the Narn homeworld, Na'Far was the first official Narn representative, replacing G'Kar. Elliot Durban, a six-month stint on ABC daytime drama One Life to Live, in 1996, was Elliot Durban. He portrayed Trevor Lansing, attorney of organized crime boss Anthony Zacchara and father of attorney Ric Lansing from August 24, 2007 to February 13, 2009, for which Soap Opera Digest named him Best Villain of 2007. In 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, and 2019, Macht's son, actor Gabriel Macht, appeared opposite his son, actor Gabriel Macht, in Suits.

Macht's involvement in feature films has been more sporadic, beginning with a stint as one of the Choirboys (1977). He appeared in Nightwing (1979), Galaxina (1980), and Watchers Reborn (1999). In three installments of the Trancers trilogy of films, Macht has also played Dr. Harris.
