Early life and career beginnings

Richie was born in Kensington, London, to Irish parents. He attended Willesden High School as an infant and began his career as a boy entertainer at a Pontins holiday camp Little Canada on the Isle of Wight and was a member of a youth theatre as a child. He made it to the live stand-up circuit, winning a prize for best new stand-up at the inaugural British Comedy Awards.

Richie performed nightly on Sky TV's chat show series Jameson Tonight, hosted by Derek Jameson and Richie and recorded at the Windmill Theatre in London in 1989. Richie made his first terrestrial television appearance on the BBC One sketch comedy show Up to Something in 1990. However, Suzy Aitchison, David Schneider, Frances Dodge, Mike Hayley, and Lewis MacLeod had to be canceled after one series was cancelled. Richie was one of five comedians alongside Maddi Cryer, Annette Law, George Marshall, and Billy Pearce.

Richie later moved to host game shows after being a hit as host of Run the Risk, a kids' quiz show that was played on BBC Morning Show Going Live. With Caught in the Act, Win, Lose, or Draw, the Shane Richie Experience (later rebranded as Love Me Do) and Lucky Numbers, he entered mainstream presenting with Caught in the Act, Win, Lose, or Draw. Danny Baker was also named in the 'doorstep challenge' TV ads for Daz detergent; he had previously switched Baker as the host of Win, Lose, or Draw. Richie said that Daz gave him so much money for doing the advertisements that they might have "snorted the stuff" if they had asked him in the 2012 Christmas episode of The Sarah Millican Television Programme, that if they had asked him.

Career

Richie has enjoyed success in musicals, appearing in Boogie Nights and Grease's 1993 revival performance. He released two albums, The Album and Once Around the Sun in 2000, which caused limited commercial interest, and his Children in Need cover version of Wham broke in the UK Singles Chart in 2003. Richie appeared in Scrooge: The Musical's touring run over Christmas 2005.

Richie was reportedly selected as the opening act for Michael Jackson's concerts at the O2 Arena in 2009. Following Jackson's death, the concerts were postponed.

Richie appeared in the pantomimes Aladdin, Cinderella, and Dick Whittington at the Wycombe Swan Theatre in High Wycombe during Christmas 2009, 2013, 2013, and 2014.

Richie's debut country music album, A Country Soul, was released on November 10, 2017, which featured songs co-written by his son, Rixton resident Jake Roche.

Richie was a regular co-host alongside Derek Jameson on "Jameson Tonight," an early Sky One talk show in 1990.

Richie started hosting Lucky Numbers (1995-1996) and appeared in The Shane Richie Experience (1995-1996).

Richie played Danny Dexter on Night and Day from 2002 to 2003. He appeared in low-profile British films, beginning with Chris Barfoot's award-winning short comedy film Dead Clean and then Distant Shadow. Richie was executive producer for the British film Shoreditch, in which he also appeared in a lead role in 2003. He invested a six-figure sum into the film's budget, but it made no money.

Richie appeared on ITV drama The Good Samaritan and Father Frank for BBC One in 2007. Bruce Gelcart, a lecherous college drama lecturer, appeared in Channel 4's second series of Skins.

Richie hosted Don't Forget the Lyrics on Sky1 on May 11, 2008, whereby contestants must finish off the lines of famous songs in order to win money.

Richie had intended to be on hand at The Paul O'Grady Show on April 25, 2008, but due to Paul O'Grady's illness, he was unable to attend.

Richie appeared in a new version of the programme Minder on Channel 5 in February 2009. Richie starred as Archie Daley, the nephew of the character Arthur Daley from the original series, rather than a remake of the original.

Richie appeared in a one-off television drama called Whatever It Takes on July 26, 2009, she plays JJ Merrick, who comes to the aid of a girl who wins a radio contest and propels her into fame, giving her a new lease on life.

Following Jimmy Savile's death, Jim'll Fix It would return to a one-off Christmas Special in December 2011, with Richie as host.

Richie produced a line of BBC One game show Reflex in January 2014, produced by Objective Productions. Richie debuted The National Lottery: Win Your Wish List in December 2014, a new Saturday night game show. In February 2016, a second series began airing.

Richie has appeared on several episodes of The One Show. Richie performed the BBC One daytime game show Decimate between 2015 and 2016.

In June 2015, it was revealed that he would be appearing in an episode of Benidorm.

Richie Richie was filming Caravanning for Channel 5 in 2019.

Richie will appear on the twentieth series of I'm a Celebrity...Get Me Out of Here, In November 2020. He came in fourth place in fourth place.

Richie began Alfie Moon's appearance in 2002, adding humour to a program that had been often mocked for being too depressing. He received numerous accolades, including the award for "Most Popular Actor" at the Rose D'Or Festival and National Television Awards in 2005, shortly before he, and co-star Jessie Wallace, dropped the show on Christmas Day in 2005.

In an interview with Digital Spy on May 8, he said that he would love to return to EastEnders as Alfie Moon.

Richie revealed on The One Show that his character Alfie Moon would return to EastEnders on July 23rd. Richie made his on-screen return to EastEnders on September 21, 2010 after a five-year absence.

Richie also narrated three episodes for the documentary film "EastEnders Revealed," a series that goes behind the scenes and investigates characters and plots, as well as Pat Evans' appearance in 2012 about Pat Evans; "Peggy Mitchell – Queen of the Vic" in 2009.

Richie will appear alongside Jessie Wallace in a six-part BBC One drama series, Redwater, on April 4, 2015. Kat and Alfie Moon, along with their mother, visited Ireland as they rewinded their history. Richie said of the film: "Both Jessie and I are absolutely thrilled to be given this wonderful opportunity." We're both thrilled to have a complete drama focusing on Kat and Alfie, and we can't wait to get to filming.

Richie briefly reprised the role in 2018, with the actor returning to the role in early 2019.

Richie will reprise the role of Alfie once more in July 2022, and the soap will return to it in the Fall.

Richie directed and appeared in the film Shoreditch, which required him to invest half a million pounds of his own money in 2003. The film received critical feedback but was not widely distributed.

Richie appeared in the Aardman Animation film Flushed Away in 2006 as a rat named Sid. Randle McMurphy, a presenter on Virgin Radio, has been seen in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest as Randle McMurphy, and he has appeared on Virgin Radio as Randle McMurphy, where he talked to Spandau Ballet's Tony Hadley.

Richie will appear in The Perfect Murder at the Theatre Royal in July 2015 alongside Jessie Wallace.

Richie married Coleen Nolan in 1990, and they had two sons, Shane Roche Jr. (born 1988) and Jake Roche (born 1992). They divorced in 1999. With wife Christie, he has three children.

Richie's autobiography Rags to Richie was released in 2003. He claims to have had sex with six girls in a chalet during his time as a Pontins Bluecoat, but broke the rules by orchestrating ticket sales outside of Grease. Richie is also accused of giving the touts free tickets, but Richie continued to sell them at a huge profit.

Richie is patron of the Shinfield Players Theatre, an amateur little theatre in Reading, Berkshire, starring Anton Rodgers, who died in 2007. On July 11, 2009, he made his first appearance in the audience for the Youth Group's production of Disco Inferno.

Richie is patron of Huntington's Disease Association in the United Kingdom.

Richie is also a member of Cherry Trees, a charity that provides respite care for children with disabilities.

Richie confessed in 2019 that he had to live in a squat if a job didn't happen. He became homeless after the squat was searched by police and was warned by the police for vaping. Richie wrote about the experience, saying, "What I learned nearly 40 years ago has had and will always have a lasting impression on me."
