Givanildo Vieira de Sousa (born 25 July 1986) is a Brazilian professional footballer who plays for Shanghai, Portugal. ['huwki] He can also function as a winger. After beginning his career with Vitória and three years in Japan, he went on to play ten seasons in Portugal with Porto, winning ten titles, including the 2010-11 European Championships and three national championships, as well as being named the league's top scorer once.

He joined Zenit Saint Petersburg in 2012, winning all three domestic titles and being the competition's best player and top scorer twice.

In 2016, he was transferred to Shanghai, China, for a whopping €58.6 million. Hulk made his international debut in 2009 and represented Brazil at the 2012 Summer Olympics as one of the three only allowed over-age participants.

He went on to represent Brazil's senior team in their 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup victory and fourth-place finish at the 2014 FIFA World Cup. He is referred to as "a fast powerhouse of a center- or wide-forward who knows his way around the box" on FIFA's official website.

He is built for a footballer, and he owed his nickname to actor Lou Ferrigno, who appeared on the eponymous television show in the 1970s.

Hulk Career

Club career

Born in Campina Grande, Paragua, Hulk began playing professionally with Esporte Clube Vitória in Salvador, Bahia, and later went on loan to Japan to play for Kawasaki Frontale. Despite being bought on January 15, 2006, he was loaned to Consadole Sapporo, where he played all the 2006 season and scored 25 goals, one less than the top scorer.

He was loaned back to Tokyo Verdy, where he was even more effective, scoring 37 goals in 42 matches and being the top goal scorer of the season. In 2008, he returned to Kawasaki briefly and rejoined Verdy after only 18 games.

Following Hulk's stay in Japan, the player transferred to Portugal, where he purchased 50% of his playing rights from Uruguayan side Rentistas for €5.5 million, with the transfer fee being paid by an unidentified investor.

In a 2–0 home victory over C.F., Moroccan teammate Tarik Sektioui sustained an injury. Hulk was given the opportunity to play forward and scored his first official domestic league goal for the team. Later, Os Belenenses retaliate against F.C. Paços de Ferreira (same location and result), as a second-half replacement, and both as a second-half replacement. He became an undisputed starter as the season progressed, leading an attacking trio with Cristian Rodrón and Lisandro López, with the trio often switching positions. By UEFA.com, he was selected as one of the Top 10 Rising Stars in the UEFA Champions League this season. With a buy-out clause that was raised to €100 million, he pushed his deal to June 2014.

Hulk was a first-choice in the 2009–2010 season. However, after a tunnel brawl during the league loss to S.L., the league lost by a narcotics match. Benfica (1–0) went on a four-month suspension (if the criminal appeal upheld the ban, he served up to three years on the sidelines), but not for the domestic competitions, as did his colleague Cristian Săpunaru. The ban was later reduced to four matches, and the player returned to league action on March 28, 2010 after missing 3 months and 18 matches, scoring in a 3–0 victory at Belenenses. In a 4–1 home victory over the United States one week later, he scored in a 4–1 victory over C.S. Martimo. With six fewer games played this season than the previous season, he had five league goals.

In his first 16 official games, Hulk scored 16 times, including a hat-trick against K.R.C. On September 26, 2010, Genk won by 22-0 home victory, 7–2 on aggregate, and 4–2 on aggregate) in the UEFA Europa League play-off stage. He won the Portuguese Championship Player of the Month from September to January, making him the first player to win the award six times. He scored the last two goals on Sunday as Porto defeated Benfica 5–0 at home, bringing a ten-point difference between the two teams, with the northerners leading the league and the latter winning it, with the player leading the goalscoring charts.

Porto paid €13.5 million to Rentistas for another 40% of Hulk's playing rights, bringing their total stake to 85 percent (Porto sold back 5% after extending his deal in 2009), with the player committing a new deal that will remain in force until 2020 and with a buy-out clause of €100 million. He finished the year with 36 goals in 53 official games, with his team winning four major championships, including a double in league/cup.

Porto beat S.C. Braga away 2-0 to go four points clear at the top of the Primeira Liga table on April 7, 2012, with Hulk's solitary goal. He scored six goals in the first three games, including a brace in a 2–0 home loss of Sporting CP, and ended the 2011–12 season with 16 league goals as his team claimed another national championship. He was named Player of the Month in May 2012 for the sixth time in a row, and he had 11 assists, a new record in the competition.

Hulk was fined €45,000 on 17 February 2014 for attacking two stewards at the Estádio da Luz.

Hulk completed a €60 million transfer to Russian Premier League club FC Zenit Saint Petersburg, reuniting with former Porto teammate Bruno Alves on September 3, 2012. Since Mitrofanov, the Zenit's General Director, denied publicly, this transfer fee sparked a lot of discussion and a lot of controversies. Mitrofanov had even shown the media that he had volunteered to cover the sale, but not €60 million, according to Russian media R-Sport. However, Porto also revealed in its unaudited quarterly report in Q1 2012–13 that the club did not pay for third parties' ownership (15%), agent fee, nor solidarity contribution (5%), which were all included in the transfer fee, as in the case of Radamel Falcao.

In a 2–2 away draw, Hulk scored his first goal for his new club in just his second league match against FC Krylia Sovetov Samara, who found the net with a trademark shot from outside the box.

Igor Denisov and Aleksandr Kerzhakov were dissatisfied with Hulk's salary and demanded the renegotiation of their terms in the second half of September, according to media speculation. As a result, they were taken to the youth squad. In a Sport Express interview, Denisov said that his standoff with club management was because of "the right organization of the team." And admiration for the Russian players, whom Zenit has always relied on." He scored and assisted in a 2–1 victory over FC Baltika Kaliningrad in the fifth round of the Russian Cup just a few days after the feud began. In a 3–2 loss to A.C. Milan in the second matchday of group stage a few weeks later, he scored his first Champions League goal for Zenit and provided an assist.

Hulk revealed in January that he was attempting to leave the club after falling out with head coach Luciano Spalletti. However, FIFA rules prohibit players from playing for more than two clubs in a season, requiring him to remain in Russia at least until June 2013. He later revealed that he had apologized to the club's leadership and that it had been settled. In a 3-1 loss to Shakhtar Donetsk's Ukrainian side, he sustained a head injury after falling under a challenge and connecting his head with a Shakhtar defender's studs. He was then admitted to a local Dubai hospital. Following Zenit's third-place finish in the Champions League group stage, the club has entered the Europa League. Despite losing 3–1 in the second leg, he scored a goal in each leg of Zenit's knockout phase match to knock out English team Liverpool from the Europa League. In a 4–0 victory over league battling Alania Vladikaz, he scored his first hat-trick of his Zenit career and assisted a goal.

Hulk signed a two-year contract extension with the club on February 16, 2015. Zenit's free kick in a 1–1 draw at FC Ufa gave them the league title with two games to spare on May 17th.

Hulk had intended to be an assistant at the 2018 World Cup qualification in Saint Petersburg but was forced to leave Zenit due to her commitments with Zenit, and Alexey Smertin took the place.

Hulk was selected by UEFA as one of the top XI players of the 2015–16 Champions League group stage.

Hulk joined Chinese side Shanghai SiPG from Zenit on June 30th, the highest level in Asian football. He will make $320,000 a week, up from £16.6 million a year. In a 5–0 win over Henan Jianye on July 10, Hulk forced Ryan McGowan's own goal nine minutes into his debut. However, he was stretched out of the pitch with a muscle injury just 12 minutes later. After a two-month absence, Hulk scored his first two goals for Shanghai SIPG against Beijing Guoan on September 9th.

During his time in Shanghai, the Hulk made 145 appearances and scored 77 goals in total, as well as a total of 77 goals.

On January 29, 2021, Hulk returned to Brazil and joined Atlético Mineiro on a two-year deal. He made his debut on March 7th, assisting Diego Tardelli's fourth goal in a 4–0 victory over Uberlândia. In a 3–0 victory over Coimbra on 19 March, he scored his first goal for the club after a penalty kick.

Hulk continued his form in the Copa Libertadores against América de Cali and Cerro Porteo, with six games without scoring and being relegated to the bench. Atlético was crowned champions of Campeonato Mineiro on May 22nd, and journalists selected Hulk into the tournament's team.

In a 2–1 victory over Corinthians in the Série A.S., Hulk scored both goals on Saturday. In the next round, he scored twice more in a 3–0 victory over Bahia. After another brace in a 2–0 victory over Juventude on November 21, he became the top scorer of the league on Sunday. Hulk started a comeback by scoring from a penalty against Bahia at the Fonte Nova arena on December 2nd; five minutes later, a Keno brace tied the three points that won the 2021 Série A trophy to Galo. Hulk scored his 19th goal in 35 appearances against Red Bull Bragantino at the Mineiro, extending his season as the top scorer in the league.

In all ten matches of Atlético's Copa do Brasil-winning campaign, Hulk scored once in eight of them, including both legs of the final against Athletico Paranaense. He became only the second player to play in both the Série A and Copa do Brasil in the same season, repeating Gabriel Barbosa's success in 2018.

In 2021, Hulk was the country's top scorer, scoring 36 goals in 68 appearances and also 13 assists. The Bola de Ouro, Craque do Brasileiro, and Copa do Brasil Golden Ball Awards were given to him for his central role in Atlético's treble-winning season. He has also been a member of CONMEBOL's Libertadores Team of the Tournament and El Pas' South American Team of the Year.

International career

As the Seleço won by 11-0, Hulk made his debut for Brazil in a friendly match against England in Doha on November 14, 2009. In a 3–1 victory over Denmark at the Imtech Arena in Hamburg on May 26, 2012, he scored his first three international goals.

In a friendly with Argentina on June 9, 2012, Hulk scored in a 3–4 loss. He was named as one of three overaged participants for Mano Menezes' Brazilian squad for the 2012 Summer Olympics in London in July, and he played in all but one of the tournament's games, netting in the 1–2 loss against Mexico.

At the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup in June 2013, Hulk represented Brazil. He appeared in every match as the team's starting right-winger, including the final, where Brazil defeated world champions Spain to win its fourth Confederations Cup title.

In the round of 16 matches against Chile in Belo Horizonte, Hulk had a goal disallowed for a handball. Claudio Bravo had his penalty saved in the shootout, but Brazil nonetheless advanced.

In August 2021, Hulk was called back to the Brazil national team for the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers after five years of exclusion.
