Dr. Henry Jayasena, born in Bendiyamulla, Gampaha, Sri Lanka, was a film performer and dramatist.

Personal life

He was born in Bendiyamulla, Gampaha, on July 6th, 1931. He attended the Gampaha branch of Lorenz College for primary education. He then enrolled in Nalanda College Colombo for his secondary education. During his time at the academy, he was classmates with many notable individuals, including Dr. Dharmasena Attygalle, Karunaratne Abeysekera, Dr. Harischandra Wijaya, Hon.

Rupa Karunathilake,

In 1962, Jayasena married fellow actress Manel Ilangakoon. Manel appeared in Jayasena's Kuweni and received the best actress award for her appearance at the State Drama Festival. Sudaraka Jayasena's son is the son of the couple. Manel has appeared in many popular television series, including Ekagei Kurullo, Sathpura Wasiyo, and Hiru Kumari. She died in 2004 at the age of 68.

Henry Jayasena Career

Early career

Jayasena started his career as an assistant teacher of English at Dehipe Primary School in Padiyapellela, who was a part of the Nuwara Eliya district in 1950. Janaki directed his first stage play while teaching at the school. However, Jaysena resigned from this position a few months after passing the General Clerical Service Examination and gaining a job with Sri Lanka's Public Works Department (PWD).

He served as Deputy Director of the National Youth Services Council in the Arts and Sports Division, as well as the Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation in Programs Division, before resigning from government service.

Golden career

Jaysena created several of his best known scripts, including Pawkarayo (1958), Janelaya (1960), Hunuweni (1964), Diriya Mawa (1972), and Sarana Siyoth Se Puthini (1975), while working with the Public Works Department. (1966) John Stewart (1965), Kuweni (1964), Manarayo (1964), Kapweni (1968), Manaranjana (1966), and Shane Bazar (1972)

Jaysena began his cinema career in 1959 with the film "Jayaweera." Jaysena appeared in "Piyal" (1964), "Azdak" in Hunuwataye Kathawa (1967) and "Lalith" in Dahasak Sithuvili (1968) and Avurududa (1986).

Following the introduction of television to Sri Lanka in the late 1970s, he appeared regularly in television series. Jayasena has been associated with the Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation from the start in the 1980s. In the tele drama "Sudu Seeya" directed by Nalan Mendis and written by Dr. Somaweera Senanayaka, he played the role of "Sudu Seeya." The serial has become extremely popular and has been coveted at several local television award shows. It was the longest tele drama telecast in Sri Lanka during the 1990s.

In 1999, Jayasena stopped acting due to a terminal disease cure. However, he made two supporting appearances in two films, Punchi Suranganavi in 2002 and Randiya Dahara in 2004.
