Early life
Jones was born in Decatur, Alabama, on January 25, 1931, to Andrew Guy Jones, a traveling construction worker, and former Nolia Elizabeth Wilhite.
Dean Jones Sings, a student at Riverside High School in Decatur, had his own local radio show, and after his release, he worked at Knott's Berry Farm in Buena Park, California.
Jones attended Asbury University in Wilmore, Kentucky, just south of Lexington, Kentucky. He did not graduate, but the university in 2003 awarded him an honorary degree. At the dedication of Asbury's Andrew S. Miller Center for Communications Arts on March 4, 2011, he addressed the community.
Personal life
Jones was born again in 1973 or 1974. His book Under Running Laughter (1982) chronicles his conversion to Christianity. He had previously suffered from bouts of depression. "One night he collapsed on his knees and prayed that God would rescue him from the miserable moods he had always suffered from," Lory's wife wrote. He told me that in an instant it was gone, and that happiness and joy were flooding into his heart."
Jones appeared in several Christian films. Charles Colson appeared in the 1977 film Born Again. In Birdwing Records' 1979 studio album, Nathaniel the Grublet, he narrated the narrator. Jones also spoke in English for the 80 minute Bible overview. God's Story: From creation to Eternity and as the voice of Father Tim for the Family Radio Theatre audio drama In Mitford in 2003, Jones provided the standard English narration for the 80-minute Bible study.
