Henri Camara Career

Club career

Camara was born in Dakar to a Guinean Susu father and a Senegalese Wolof mother. He started his career with Racing Club de Strasbourg Alsace (1998–1999) before playing for Swiss clubs Neuchâtel Xamax (1999-2000), and Grasshopper Club Zürich, where he won the Swiss Championship in 2001. He then returned to France with Sedan, but Sedan requested a new challenge after being relegated in 2003.

Camara joined Wolverham Wanderers, a newly promoted English Premier League club, in August 2003 for £1.5 million. He was a regular first-choice player with exceptional finishing that left him with only one goal from 23 games, this goal being the primary winner as Wolves came back from 3 down to defeat relegation opponents Leicester City 4-3. He found his scoring touch and hit 6 times in the final 9 games as the season came to an end. Well, although this did not prevent relegation, he was named as the Fans' Player of the Year in 2006.

Camara, on the other hand, was unable to play at a lower level and did not turn up for pre-season training. Phil Gartside, Bolton Wanderers' chairman, made his future even more uncertain, but Wolves chief executive Jez Moxey turned down. He returned to the club eventually, but only after arranging a loan transfer.

Camara's way out of Wolves came in the form of Celtic, who paid £1.5 million to put him on loan for the 2004-05 season. However, his time in Scotland was disappointing, as he scored eight goals from 12 starts and six substitute appearances. Camara announced in the media that he would trade Henrik Larsson, who had only left the team. Larsson's squad number (7), which he had played with at a previous club as well, but was instead given number 27.

Despite being contracted for longer, the loan agreement was terminated during the January 2005 transfer window, as he returned to England with Southampton. As the Saints dropped on the final day of the season, here, he suffered relegation once more.

Camara recently signed Premiership newcomers Wigan Athletic in August 2005 in a three-year contract for £3 million. His deal was extended to 2009 due to his outstanding goal scoring success. He had a blast playing with Jason Roberts as they interacted well. He stumbled into a Premier League relegation war for the third time for him, but Wigan made it a good deal for him on Friday when he was unable to afford Sheffield United.

Camara was out of favour at Wigan and was loaned out to West Ham United for the remainder of the 2007–08 season, at the end of the Summer transfer window. He had a blast at West Ham and would like to find another club in England by his own admission. Despite allowing him to leave on a loan, Steve Bruce suggested that if Camara wanted to stay at Wigan, he was more than welcome to do so.

Camara scored a brace in his first game back for Wigan under Bruce in the League Cup, defeating Notts County 4–0. In a 1–0 victory over Wigan on November 24, the team's first victory over Everton on home soil. The following match, he scored against West Bromwich Albion. He was at Wigan in the 2006 Football League Cup Finals, but not before that.

Camara joined Stoke City on loan until the end of the season in search of regular first-team football on February 2nd. He missed his first opportunity off the bench for his Sunderland debut on Sunday, throwing a volley from 6 yards against the bar with the entire goal in mind. After not being offered a new deal, he was resigned by Wigan at the end of the 2008–09 season.

Camara spent much of the 2009 season on trial at Hull City's Premier League club, but was not offered a contract.

Camara signed a short-term contract with the Sheffield club until the end of the season after initially refusing a deal with the Blades. Camara lost in 4-3 loss to Cardiff City at the end of October and scored his first goal for the club in a 1–0 victory over Peterborough United a month later. He made 23 appearances on the bench, many from the bench, and scored four goals, but was released after his deal came to an end as the club sought to reduce the wage bill.

Camara signed a one-year contract with Atromitos, a Super League Greece side.

Camara signed a one-year deal with Super League side Panetolikos on June 19, 2011. Despite being in all 30 league games and being Panetolikos' top scorer with seven goals, he couldn't help his team escape relegation.

Camara signed a one-year contract with Panetolikos on August 27, 2012, and the team's return to the Greek Super League came after only one year at the Greek Football League.

He signed a new one-year contract with Panetolikos in the summer of 2013.

Camara signed a year contract with Kalloni on May 12th, 2014, for an undisclosed fee. On February 1, 2015, he resigned.

Lamia confirmed the player's stay at the start of the season on February 2, 2015.

Camara returned to Panetolikos F.C. on August 18, 2015, on a one-year contract. Camara and Panetolikos parted ways on January 18, 2016. Camara, who had been offered by Apollon Smyrni F.C., has requested that his deal with Panetolikos be terminated in an attempt to get more playing time and reach 100 Senegal caps.

Camara joined Apollon Smyrni on January 19, 2016.

Fostiras, a Greek third-tier team, spent the 2017-18 season. In August 2018, he retired from football at the age of 41.

International career

Camara made his international debut for Senegal in a 1–1 African Cup of Nations qualifier against Nigeria on February 28. He continued to play in the 2002 World Cup, scoring two goals, including a golden goal, in the Round of 16 against Sweden, which advanced to the quarter-finals for the first time in history. He was also a member of the 2000, 2002, 2004, 2006, and 2008 Africa Cup of Nations squads.

Camara also appeared in Ronaldinho's squad for a charity football match. The match took place between Europe and the rest of the world. Camara came as a replacement and scored two goals in the second half to help his team win.

Camara may have played for Guinea if his father was born in Guinea. "I was born in Senegal, but my father is from Guinea," he said, so, yes, I might have competed with Momo Sylla in the Guinea national team. I was invited by the Senegal youth team as a youth, but my dad didn't want me to play. It was his dream for me to play for Guinea. However, I didn't know Guinea well. Senegal was my country, so it was a simple decision for me to make."
