Guy Hoffman (born May 20, 1954 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin) is a drummer and singer who appeared in Oil Tasters, BoDeans, Violent Femmes, and Absinthe.
He is a composer for films including Field Day and a founding member of Radio Romeo.
Life
At the age of nine, Hoffman began playing drums. Under the leadership of Eddie Allen, Sylvia Spicuzza, LeRoy Augustine, and Joe Ferrara of the Shorewood public school system, he developed skills in music and art. Hoffman concentrated on watercolor painting and drawing under the direction of professor Laurence Rathsack, who worked at University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee (UWM) Fine Arts from 1972 to 1976. He has appeared with local bands at live music venues around Wisconsin. Hoffman studied graphic arts with Leon Travanti from 1977 to 1978, and graduated from UWM with a BA in fine art and visual communication.
Music career
Hoffman was a founding member of The Haskels and Oil Tasters, Milwaukee's punk scene. He was a founding member of BoDeans, Milwaukee's roots rock band. He appears on BoDeans' debut album "Love & Hope & Sex & Dreams," which was reissued in 2009 as a CD/DVD set). Hoffman appears in BoDeans' films "She's A Runaway" and "Fadeaway" are among the songs. In 1998, Sam Llanas, a BoDeans singer/songwriter, formed the band Absinthe and released A Good Day To Die.
In 1993, Hoffman joined Violent Femmes. In 1997, two versions of "Blister In The Sun," the Femmes' signature song, were recorded with Hoffman for Grosse Pointe Blank's motion picture soundtrack. Hoffman appears in film and television shows such as "Woodstock 94," "Sabrina, the Teenage Witch," "VH-1 Hard Rock Live," and others. He appeared on numerous music websites and late-night talk shows in the United States, Canada, Europe, and Australia. Hoffman's contributions were included in two Violent Femmes reissued CD/DVD compilations in 2005. Violent Femmes has also created the back cover for the album New Times.
On the CD Jeanne Spicuzza, Hoffman plays drums. In the film Field Day, the song "Let the Mermaids Flirt With Me" appears.
Victor DeLorenzo, a returning original drummer, was recalled in the Femmes in 2002. He continued to work on other projects, but he appeared in a few select shows with the Violent Femmes in 2006.
Hoffman formed Radio Romeo, a Los Angeles-based rock band, in 2005.
In 2006, he returned to performing shows with Violent Femmes in Southern California. The new album, Archive Series No. 123. 2: Live in Chicago, showcases the trio's unique acoustic style, with Hoffman on snare drum and backing vocals.
