Steve Smith Life

Steven Bruce Smith (born August 21, 1954) is an American drummer best known as a member of Journey, and he is returning to the band for the third time in 2015.

Readers of Modern Drummer magazine have voted him the No. 1 in the nation. 5 years in a row.

Smith was named one of the Top 25 Drummers of All Time in 2001, and in 2002, he was inducted into the Modern Drummer Hall of Fame.

On April 7, 2017, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Journey.

Early life

Smith started playing drums at age two and in 1963, he began formal training with Boston area drum teacher Bill Flanagan, who appeared in major bands during the swing period. Smith bought his first "real" drum set when he was 12 years old. On many nights, Steve could be seen in a small shed in the backyard of his Harvard Street home. Smith spent time in his teens in the typical school band and garage bands, including Clyde, a South Shore sensation, but he also began to expand his musical career by playing in a professional concert band and the big band at local Bridgewater State College.
