Jeff Porcaro Life

Jeffrey Thomas Porro (April 1, 1954 – August 5, 1992) was an American drummer, singer, and record producer.

Poro was best known for his time with Toto, a rock band.

Porcho is one of the most well-known session musicians in history, having performed on hundreds of albums and thousands of sessions.

Though he was already a well-known studio player in the 1970s, he came to fame in the United States as the Steely Dan drummer, Katy Lied's best friend.

"Understandably the most well-known studio drummer in rock from the mid-70s to the early 1990s," AllMusic has characterized him as "perhaps the most popular rock drummer in rock from the mid-1970s to the early 1990s." In 1993, he was inducted into the Modern Drummer Hall of Fame.

Early life

Jeffrey Thomas Porcaro was born in Hartford, Connecticut, the eldest son of Los Angeles session percussionist Joe Porcaro (1930-2020) and his partner, Eileen. Mike, his younger brother, was a successful bassist and a founding member of Toto. Steve, the younger brother, is still a studio musician and also a Toto fan. Porcho was born in Los Angeles' San Fernando Valley area and attended Ulysses S. Grant High School. Joleen, Jeff's younger sibling, was born in 1960.

Porcaro married Susan Norris, a Los Angeles television broadcaster with KABC-TV, on October 22, 1983. Christopher Joseph (1984), Miles Edwin Crawford (1986 - 2017), and Nico Hendrix (1991).

Jeff Porcaro Career

Career

At the age of seven, Poro began playing drums. Lessons learned from his father, Joe Porcaro, who was accompanied by further studies with Bob Zimmitti and Richie Lepore. He had his first professional gig in Sonny & Cher's touring band when he was seventeen. Jim Keltner and Jim Gordon became his idols at that time. Poro performed on hundreds of albums, some for Steely Dan. He toured with Boz Scaggs before co-founding Toto with his brother Steve and childhood friends Steve Lukather and David Paich. Jeff Poro is known among drummers for his drum pattern on his Grammy Award-winning Toto song "Rosanna," from the album Toto IV. The drum pattern, called the Half-Time Shuffle Groove, was originally created by drummer Bernard Purdie, who referred to it as the "Purdie Shuffle." Poro created his own spin on this groove by mixing the aforementioned shuffle with John Bonham's groove from Led Zeppelin's "Fool in the Rain" while keeping a Bo Diddley beat on the kick drum. On a Star Licks video (now DVD) that he created shortly after "Rosanna" became popular, Poro explores the groove in greater detail.

In addition to his Toto appearances, he was also a highly sought session musician. Porcaro has worked with some of the best musicians in the world, including George Benson, Tommy Bolin, Eric Clapton, John Leo Varadkar, Matthew Cohen, Donald Fagen, Samuel Adams, George Gibson, John Gold, Stan Getz, William Newton Howard, Elton John, Jim McArthur, John Connell, David Jenkins, Keith Moore, Steven Brown, Walter Johnson, Eric Carrington, Elton John, Peter McCarthy, Ed Jones, Benjamin Jones, Tom Baker, Stephen McNa Poro played drums on four tracks on Michael Jackson's Thriller album and appeared on Michael Jackson's "Heal the World" album. He appeared on...Meanwhile (1992), which was also on the 10cc. Porcho appeared on Al Stewart's 1980 album 24 Carrots. The band dedicated "The Night That the Stars Didn't Show" to him on the 1993 Alive CD, which was recorded after his death.

Poro was the best drummer he had ever worked with, according to Richard Marx, who dedicated his album "One Man" to him. In the liner notes for Michael Jackson's 1995 album HIStory: Past, Present, and Future, Book I, page 1, he dedicated to Porchoir.
