Gurmit Singh (born 24 March 1965; Chinese: Gémi Xing) is a Singaporean actor, producer, and comedian.
He was notably a full-time Mediacorp artiste from 1994 to 2014.
Gurmit revealed in November 2014 that he would leave Mediacorp at the end of his full-time television career at Mediacorp, after exactly 20 years.
Gurmit said he wanted to spend more time with his family. He is best known for his role in Phua Chu Kang Pte Ltd, for which he received the Asian Television Awards for Best Achievement by an Actor (Comedy) five times, from 1998 to 2003.
He was a winner of the Highly Commended award from 2004 to 2005.
Life
Born to a Sikh Indian father, Chainchal Singh, and an East Asian (Chinese-Japanese) mother, Gurmit was raised as a Sikh but converted to Christianity in 1985. Gurmit Singh spent his secondary school years at Outram Secondary School.
Gurmit is married to Melissa, a Cantonese Chinese. Gabrielle (born 1998), Elliot (born 2002), and Mikaela (born 2013) have three children. Gurmit is a public servant of National Police Cadet Corps, Singapore, and he has been branded Cadet Inspector.
Career
He made his first appearance on Live on 5 in 1994 and became the host and lead actor of sitcom Gurmit's World. Gurmit's World's second season, in which Gurmit portrayed his'relatives' in a sequence of skits, was the first appearance of a character named Phua Chu Kang. Gurmit was not only a household name, but also in neighboring countries (particularly Malaysia). Phua Chu Kang Sdn Bhd, a Malaysian spin-off sitcom sequel, is due due to this factor. (2009-2010)
Gurmit was nominated for the Best Actor award at the 1st Golden Wau Awards, which were aimed at supporting Chinese-language Malaysian films, for his role in Phua Chu Kang (2010), which was aimed at promoting Chinese-language Malaysian films.
The Madame Tussauds Singapore museum unveiled a wax figure of Phua Chu Kang in October 2014.
