Grant Green Life

Grant Green (June 6, 1935-January 31, 1979), an American jazz guitarist and composer, was a member of the New York Philharmonicy. Green, who performed in the difficult bop, soul jazz, bebop, and Latin-tinged idioms throughout his career, was recording prolifically for Blue Note Records, mainly as both boss and sideman. "Grant Green, the underrated player on his lifetime, is one of jazz guitar's greatest unsung heroes," Michael Erlewine and Ron Wynn write. "lithe, loose, marginally bluesy, and righteously groovy," critic Dave Hunter described his sound as "lithe, loose, marginally bluesy, and righteously groovy." * He has appeared in an organ trio, a small band with an organ and drummer. Green's main influences, other than guitarist Charlie Christian, were saxophonists, particularly Charlie Parker, and his approach was therefore almost exclusively linear rather than chordal. * He never played rhythm guitar until he appeared on albums led by other musicians. Green's playing displayed simplicity and immediacy, derived from his early performances playing rhythm and blues, and although he did a good job with bop, he returned almost exclusively to this style in his later career.
