Gökhan Gönül (born 4 January 1985) is a Turkish professional footballer who plays for the Besiktas club Götuin.
Gönül is also a senior international for Turkey. Gönül was born in Bafra, Samsun, where he and his family lived before heading to Bursa, where Gönül was six years old.
In 1999, his uncle signed him up with Bursayolspor's youth team, and Gönül began his football career as a goalkeeper.

Early life
Gönül was born in Bafra, Samsun, where he and his family lived before heading to Bursa when Gönül was six years old. In 1999, his uncle signed him to Bursayolspor's youth team, and Gönül began his football career as a goalkeeper. Gönül was also moved to the outfield after many other young goalkeepers joined the club, but not before many other young goalkeepers were moved to the outfield. Gönül was told he would not play goalkeeper again after putting in several appearances. Gönül did football as a hobby and something to do when there was nothing else to do. He began taking the sport seriously when his mentor, Mehmet Kirazolu, took him under his wing and taught him individually. Gönül was 13 at the time and played in a senior match against 30-year-olds shortly after; Gönül was 30-year-olds at the time.
Gönül played at many positions before deciding to find his calling, as a libero, midfielder, and forward at various levels. Gönül, the captain of Bursayolspor's 14-16 team, was the team's 3-3 draw with Bursaspor, scoring three goals while playing libero. Following his success, Hasan Bora, a Bursaspor employee at the time, was interested in signing Gönül. Gönül, on the other hand, refused to join the club after several of his peers joined and failed to advance, but he took it as a warning and declined to join the club. Fatih Terim, then-capt. Galatasaray's coach, expressed an interest in Gönül. Gönül invited the youngster to Istanbul, but the youngster did not want to join the team. Rather, he joined Gençlerbirli on September 9, 2002.
Career
Gönül started his career with a Ankara-based club in the A2 league. In his first season in 19 A2 league appearances, he scored two goals in 19 A2 league appearances. Gönül was loaned out to Hacettepe's feeder club during the following season. He spent the 2003-2004 season on loan before joining the club on a complete transfer at the end of the season. Gönül scored eight goals in 48 appearances in his first two seasons with the club, and helped the club win back-to-back promotions. At the start of the 2005–06 season, Gençlerbirlii returned him to the club. However, an injury kept him sidelined for several months, and he was unable to make his club debut until this season. Rather, he was loaned out once more to Hacettepe during the winter break. Gönül was assisting the club in another promotion, winning three promotions in four years. He also received the TFF First League award for Best Player.
Fenerbahçe dropped him before the 2007–08 season, where he flourished under then-coach Zico. He gained the nickname "Turkish Cafu" after his success in the 2007-08 UEFA Champions League. For the first time in club history, the club reached the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League. Gökhan Gönül's deal was extended in June 2012. He will be a member of the club until the 2015–16 season and take home €1.7 million per season.
International career
Gönül was never capped at international level as a youth athlete. On November 27, 2007, he made his debut against Norway. Gönül made three more appearances in the Euro 2008 squad, but was not able to make the squad due to his injury.
He is a member of Turkey's national team for Euro 2016.
