William Glenn Scott (né Shadix, 1952 – September 7, 2010), also known as Glenn Shadix in Tim Burton's horror comedy film Beetlejuice, and as the voice of Halloween Town's Mayor.
Early life
Shadix was born in Bessemer, Alabama, on April 15, 1952, as the family's eldest child. When his mother, Annie Ruth (née Livingston), remarried a few years after his birth, his surname was changed to "Scott," but he'll keep his original surname when acting as an actor. Arnold Powell, a student at Birmingham-Southern College, studied with absurdist playwright Robert Powell for two years.
Personal life
Shadix was gay. He came out to his parents at the age of 17. They then enrolled him in "ex-gay therapy" (which also included shock treatments). When this didn't change his orientation, he attempted suicide by overdosing with Elavil. His parents took him to the hospital, where he recovered from a three-day illness. His parents began to accept his sexuality following the incident.
After 30 years in Los Angeles, he moved to Bessemer, Alabama, where he purchased a Queen Anne-style Victorian-era house. On December 13, 2008, the house was completely destroyed by a fire. "I've lost my hope," Shadix told reporters.
Career
Before moving to Hollywood in 1977, he lived in Manhattan, New York City. When appearing in The Groundlings comedy troupe and playing Gertrude Stein in the stage play Doctor Faustus Lights the Lights, he made his breakthrough film role in Beetlejuice. Tim Burton of Beetlejuice went on to film Shadix in 1993's The Nightmare Before Christmas and the 2001 version of Planet of the Apes. He appeared on some of the most popular television shows, including Cheers, Roseanne, and Seinfeld, throughout the 1990s.
When FedEx sponsored Shadix in 1995, he was cast as Ray Cathode in the Space Mountain queue ads.
In season five of the Teen Titans animated film, Shadix appeared as the Brain and Monsieur Mallah. His other voice work includes the aforementioned Nightmare, as well as episodes of Jackie Chan Adventures and Justice League Unlimited (where he appeared as Steven Mandragora). In the video game The Nightmare Before Christmas: Oogie's Revenge, he reprised his Nightmare Before Christmas role, as well as the Square Enix video game Kingdom Hearts II.
His television appearances include HBO's Carnivènele, the NBC television comedy Seinfeld, in which he played Jerry's landlord, as well as the roles of giant brothers Typhoon and Typhon in Hercules: The Legendary Journeys. Shadix was supposed to begin rehearsals for Alan Bennett's History Boys' Birmingham production.
