Early life
Giambattista Valli, who was born and raised in Rome, completed studies at a liceo (an Italian secondary school) and then obtained a diploma in art. At Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design in London, he began a foundation course in illustration in 1987.
Career
Valli migrated to Paris and spent time as Creative Director for Emanuel Ungaro from 1988 to 2004 after stints at Roberto Capucci (1986–1990), Fendi (1990–1995) and Krizia (1995–1996). Ungaro credited Valli with restoring the house and naming him as his replacement when he retired in 2004. The Ferragamo family, which owned Ungaro, had fired him shortly after an internal confrontation.
Valli began his eponymous brand in 2005, heralding his first ready-to-wear show in Paris, where he had migrated from Italy to fulfill his ever-inpiring dream of having a true "Maison."
In Paris, Giambattista Valli's ready-to-wear and haute couture collections alternate. He is one of the few non-French designers to be accepted into the prestigious Chambre Syndicate de la Haute Couture. In July 2011, he unveiled his first Couture collection.
