Gia Scala Life

Gia Scala (March 3, 1934 – April 30, 1972) was an Italian-American actress and model.

Early life

Scala was born in Liverpool, England, on March 3, 1934, to Sicilian father Pietro Scoglio and Irish mother Eileen O'Sullivan. Tina Scala, her one sister, was also an actress.

Scala was brought up in Messina and Mili San Marco in Sicily, the latter on the estate of her grandfather, Natale Scoglio, one of Sicily's biggest citrus growers. Scala was 16 years old when she moved to the United States to live with her aunt Agata in Whitestone, Queens, New York City. After graduating from Bayside High School, she migrated to Manhattan to study acting. Scala earned her income by working at a travel company.

Scala learned acting at night while working with airlines and an insurance company, with Stella Adler as one of her instructors. She met Steve McQueen, who lived from 1952 to 1954. Scala began to appear on game shows, including Stop the Music, where she was spotted by Maurice Bergman, an executive of Universal International, headquartered in New York City.

Gia Scala Career

Career

Scala and her mother, Robert McCarthy, accompanied by her mother, went to Los Angeles in 1954 to see a film test for the role of Mary Magdalene in The Gallileans. Even though she didn't get the role, Universal Studios' Peter Johnson was impressed with Scala's screen test. Scala's first official role in Hollywood came as she was given a non-speaking, uncredited role in the film All That Heaven Allows, starring Rock Hudson. Despite her minor role in the film, Universal Studios has signed her to a deal, dyed her hair brown, had her four front teeth capped, and gave her the stage name Gia Scala.

Henry Mancini, a songwriter, appeared on the set of Four Girls in Town. "Cha Cha for Gia," which appeared uncredited in the 1957 film, was inspired by her beauty.

Scala was extremely distraught following her mother's death in 1957. She became a naturalized American citizen in 1958. Scala's first appearance in films include Tip on a Dead Jockey (1957), The Tunnel of Love (1958), and The Guns of Navarone (1961), starring Gregory Peck and David Niven.

Scala made regular appearances on American television during the 1960s, including Alfred Hitchcock Presents, Convoy, The Islanders, Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea, Twelve O'Clock High, Tarzan, and "Is it a Thief (1969), her final acting role.
