Joyce Benignia Van Patten (born March 9, 1934) is an American stage, film, and television actress best known for the wry, astringent, and neurotic characters she portrays.

Among many roles, one of her most well-known roles is that of Jason Beghe's character in the horror film Monkey Shines (1988).

Personal life

Josephine Rose (née Acerno), a magazine advertising executive, and Richard Byron Van Patten, an interior decorator, were born in New York City. Her mother was of Italian descent, and her father was of Dutch and English ancestry.

She is the younger sister of actor Dick Van Patten and actor John Van Patten, as well as actor/director Tim Van Patten's half-sister. She married and divorced three more times after a brief marriage to Thomas King at the age of 16 (she gave birth to a son, Thomas Jr., a year later). She was married to actor Martin Balsam from 1959 to 1962, and they had a child, actress Talia Balsam.

Van Patten has appeared in scores of television shows. She was a member of As the World Turns' original cast. Claudia Gramus, the long-suffering wife of diner owner Bert Gramus (played by Edelman), made her television debut as a featured regular on The Danny Kaye Show in 1968-1970. She appeared in two Perry Mason episodes ("The Case of the Thermal Thief") and "The Case of the Prankish Professor"). She appeared on Stoney Burke, Hawaii Five-O, Gunsmoke, The Untouchables, The Acting Lady Anne, The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis, The Outer Limits, Mr. Mannix, The Sopranos, Mr. Burke, The Outer Limits, Mr. Jones, The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis, The Jim Crowton Show, The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis, The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis, The Outer Van Patten, the museum's founder and curator who commits murder, was the lead on an episode of Columbo, "Old Fashioned Murder." She appeared in "Negative Reaction" (with Dick Van Dyke) of the same film in 1974. She appeared in The Martian Chronicles in 1979 as Iris Chapman in The Mary Tyler Moore Hour, and the following year, she appeared in The Martian Chronicles.
