Careers
In the prologues and epilogues of Paulsen's books, a lot of what is known about his biography was revealed. Paulsen writes in The Quilt, one of a series of three books based on summers spent with his grandmother, how his grandmother had a major influence on him. It's difficult to decide how accurate an autobiography is supposed to be, as Paulsen is supposed to have been six years old in this story but then made mention of events that weren't supposed to have been scheduled later. In this book, he refers to himself in the third person but not as "the boy."
The outdoors is a large part of Paulsen's work, which emphasizes the importance of nature. In his novels, he often employs "coming of age" themes, where a protagonist masters the art of living in solitude as a rite of passage to manhood and maturity. He was critical of technology and has been described as a Luddite.
Hatchet (1986), according to Paulsen's New York Times obituary, is possibly his best-known book. Dogsong (1985) and The Winter Room (1989) are two other well-known works.
The ALA Margaret Edwards Award honors one author and a particular body of work for their "conservative and lasting contribution to young adult literature." In 1997, Paulsen received the annual award, citing six books from 1983 to 1990: Dancing Carl, Hatchet (first in the series), The Winter Room, Canyons, and Woodsong. "T]he theme of life is weaved throughout, whether it's a plane crash or lives in an unhealthy, alcoholic household," Hatchet said, "incorporating a survival theme in all its aspects, physical and psychological."
Three of Paulsen's books were runners-up for the Newbery Medal, the highest ALA annual book award for children's literature: Dogsong, Hatchet, and The Winter Room.
