Fernando Gago Life

Fernando Rubén Gago (Spanish pronunciation: [fenando ao]; born 10 April 1986) is an Argentine professional footballer and football manager of Racing Club.

Gago played for Boca Juniors, Real Madrid, Roma, Valencia, and Vélez Sarsfield during his 16-year club career, but he was limited by multiple injuries.

Gago competed for Argentina from 2007 to 2017 as a full international, as well as winning a gold medal at the 2008 Olympics.

Personal life

As youth in Argentina, Gago, Sergio Agüero, and Lionel Messi were all teammates. The three of them won the 2005 FIFA World Youth Championship in the Netherlands as a team.

Gago is a literature and art enthusiast. After landing in Spain, he did visit the Museo del Prado for the first time. Since Ramón Maddoni scolded him for playing with his hair, he earned the nickname "El Pintita" (roughly meaning "the little one trying to look good in English). In addition, his Boca Juniors teammates would scold him, "Stop trying to look good and run."

Gago is married to Gisela Dulko, a professional tennis player, with whom he has two sons and a daughter. In 2021, the couple married after he had an affair with one of her relatives.

Gago's father died of a stroke in September 2005, when Gago was playing for Boca Juniors against Racing Club. His brother died in February 2021 while Gago was guiding Aldosivi against the same club.

Fernando Gago Career

Club career

Gago, who was born in Ciudadela, Argentina's Greater Buenos Aires, emerged from Boca Juniors' youth divisions. In Boca's 1–0 win over Quilmes on December 5, 2004, the Torneo Apertura made his professional debut. In a 3–2 victory over Vélez Sarsfield at La Bombonera on October 1, 2006, he scored his first professional goal of his career and the first one of his initial Boca spell.

Real Madrid reported on December 21, 2006, that Gago had signed a 61-year contract for a €20 million fee, effective from the start of the calendar year. His signing came shortly after the death of fellow Argentine youngster Gonzalo Higua and a teenage Brazilian full-back Marcelo.

He made his debut in La Coru's 2–0 loss in 2007, partnering Emerson in defensive midfield at the expense of Mahamadou Diarra's injury and being suspended for forward Ronaldo after 58 minutes; local sports daily Diario AS said he barely influenced the game. Real Madrid lost the league on May 20th after losing the tournament to Recreativo de Huelva in the 35th round, but in added time, he gave Roberto Carlos for the 3–2 champion, who led Real Madrid to victory.

Gago suffered left knee ligament damage in a friendly against Peguarol in August 2008, and he has missed the start of the new season. He returned to the team on September 17th for a UEFA Champions League match against FC BATE Borisov, ending the match after 36 minutes due to his left femural biceps and being out for another month. He scored his only goal of his 121 Real Madrid games on December 7th, equalizing in a 4–3 loss to Sevilla at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium; on January 31, 2009, he was given his first red card for the team against Numancia in a 2–0 victory over Numancia.

Gago ceded his number 8 shirt to new signing Kaká ahead of Fabio Cannavaro's return to Juventus; he had coveted the number since it had been worn by Zinedine Zidane before. Gago did not play for three months for Real Madrid from the start of 2009 to 2010. Gago failed to get playing time under new Madrid coach José Mourinho's reign as a result of both a long injury outbreak and Mourinho's pick for the tandem of Xabi Alonso and Sami Khedira in defensive midfield.

Gago joined Italian Serie A side Roma on loan until the 2011-12 season, with a goal of a permanent move. Nuri ahin, formerly of Borussia Dortmund, was given his number 5 jersey. On his arrival in the Italian capital, he denied claims that he was too similar to his new colleague Daniele De Rossi by saying that the two had differences that would work well together.

Gago made his home debut on September 11th, defeating Cagliari 2–1 as a replacement for Aleandro Rosi for the last 15 minutes. He scored his first goal for Roma against Lecce on November 20th, a long-range strike that resulted in a 2–1 win; two weeks later, he was dismissed in a 3–0 loss at Fiorentina.

Gago's one year at Roma was untroubled by injuries compared to his previous seasons at Real Madrid. The Giallorossi were unable to accept Madrid's offer of €7 million to make his contract permanent after a seventh-place finish.

Valencia purchased Gago on a four-year contract on July 19, 2012, just after returning from loan to Real Madrid. He made his debut on August 19th and played the full 90 minutes in a 1–1 away draw against his former club.

Vélez Sársfield, a teen who had been looking for a six-month loan without a purchase option, signed Gago in January 2013. He had previously turned down offers from Russia and Turkey. His brief stay at El Fortn was marred by increased muscle and knee injuries. He only scored one goal in his seven games, ending with a 3–0 home win over Deportes Iquique in Chile's second stage of the 2013 Copa Libertadores on February 20.

In July 2013, Boca Juniors purchased 50% of Gago's playing rights from Valencia for a €1.7 million price. He has signed a three-year contract with the intention of bringing the Argentina squad to the Argentina squad for the 2014 FIFA World Cup. He left the game after 24 seconds due to a left Achilles tendon injury in the Superclásico away from River Plate in late September.

Gago suffered the same injury after 44 minutes at home to River Plate on April 24, 2016, and recovered at the end of November. In March 2017, his deal was extended for three years. He sustained another injury while on international service in October and did not recover until May 2018.

Boca Juniors defeated River in the 2018 Copa Libertadores Finals, and the second leg had to be played at Gago's former club ground in Madrid due to hooliganism. He came on in the 89th minute for captain Pablo Pérez, just before the game came to an end, and he sustained another Achilles injury in the 116th minute. Boca lost 3-1 with nine men after using all four substitutes and getting Wilmar Barrios sent off.

Gago was released by Boca and signed a one-year deal with Vélez Sarsfield ahead of the 2019-20-20 season. Gabriel Heinze, his ex Real Madrid and international teammate, was his new manager. He made his comeback in a 3–1 home win over Newell's Old Boys on August 24, 2019. He announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 34 in November 2020.

International career

Gago was a member of the under-20 team that won the 2005 FIFA World Youth Championship. In a 1–0 friendly victory over France on February 7, he made his senior international debut on February 7th. He competed in the 2007 Copa América and was a member of the Olympic team that won the gold medal.

Gago was one of over 100 players used by Diego Maradona in 2010, but he was also one of the highest-profile absentees for the final tournament in South Africa. He has rejoined the team for the 2011 Copa América.

Gago was selected in Argentina's 23-man squad for the 2014 FIFA World Cup. At the Estádio do Maracan, he made his World Cup debut in Argentina's 2–1 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina, as a halftime replacement for Hugo Campagnaro. He was named in the starting lineup for the team's second match, a 1–0 victory over Iran in Belo Horizonte, and remained a starter until being replaced by Lucas Biglia in the quarterfinals. After 85 minutes of the final, where Argentina lost 0–1 to Germany after extra time, Gago replaced Enzo Pérez.

Gago returned to the national team against Peru on October 5th, 2017. He sustained cruciate ligament damage in his right knee in his last international match.

Managerial career

Gago was appointed manager of Aldosivi's Argentine Primera División party on January 17th. On his debut on February 14th, he lost 2–1 at home to Godoy Cruz. After a string of six consecutive losses that left the team in 23rd, he resigned on September 27th.

Gago returned to work on October 21, 2021, after signing with Racing Club until the end of the year. On his debut at Rosario Central two days later, he lost 2–1.
