Eva Kaili, a top Greek MEP, has been released from Belgian jail and placed under house arrest

Eva Kaili, the 44-year-old former European Parliament vice president and MEP, was fitted with an electronic tracker as she awaits prosecution for one of the biggest scandals to have rocked European Union institutions. As they drove out of Haren prison in northern Brussels in a blackout Mercedes, the former TV presenter turned Socialist politician was joined by her counsel. They then escorted to her apartment near the European Parliament, where she coiled the window to briefly speak with reporters.

According to a lawyer, a MEP in the £1.3 million scandal begged her father to get rid of money that had landed her in jail

Eva Kaili, a 44-year-old former TV presenter, has been accused of stealing bribes from Qatar. She confessed to her father that she begged him to delete a suitcase with 750,000 euros of 'dirty money.' Francesco Giorgi, 35, is to blame for the money. However, she says she begged her father Alexandros Kailis to take the money from her house. She had two choices: One was to turn her husband into the police; the second was to hand over the money to the child's owner,' said her advocate, Michalis Dimitrakopoulos. The Left-wing MEP had referred to the collection as "dirty money," he said. When Belgian police arrested Mr Kailis at a five-star hotel in Brussels on December 9 in an alleged attempt to return it, they confiscated the 750,000 euros.

It's not just right-wing MPs who are corrupt, not just right-wing MPs who are dishonest

DOTMINIC LAWSON: The opening of a cash-for-votes scam at the European Parliament's highest levels is a triumph for Belgian intelligence services, especially in the detention of Eva Kaili, who has since been suspended as Vice President of the EU parliament. According to investigators, the kingpin is an Italian trade union leader and former Socialist MEP Pier Antonio Panzeri.
