Deepender Singh Hooda (born 4 January 1978) is an Indian politician who served in Lok Sabha from Rohtak.

He is the third generation of his family to be in such a position: Bhupinder Singh Hooda is his father, while his grandfather, Ranbir Singh Hooda, was a member of the Constituent Assembly and Minister of Punjab (when Haryana was a part of Punjab). When Hooda first entered politics in 2005, he was the youngest parliamentarian.

Education

Deepender Hooda holds a Bachelor of Technology and Master of Business Administration degree as well as a Bachelor of Law degree. He obtained his engineering degree from the Technological Institute of Textile & Sciences, Bhiwani, and was then head by the Birla Education Trust. He earned his MBA from Kelley School of Business, Bloomington, Indiana University, where he concentrated in Finance and Strategy. In a unanimous vote, he was named president of the Asian Students Association at University (top 1% of class) and was elected president of the Asian Students Association at University. During this period, he led a group of Asian students from the top 15 business schools in the United States in the organization of the Asia Business Conference at Harvard Business School.

He earned his law degree from the University of Delhi's prestigious Campus Law Centre, Faculty of Law (2016–20).

He attended school at Mayo College, Ajmer, Delhi Public School, RK Puram, and Model School, Rohtak.

Personal life

Deepender Hooda married Sweta Mirdha, the grand daughter of Nathuram Mirdha, a member of the Indian National Congress in Rajasthan. Jyoti Mirdha, her older sister, is a former Congress MP from Nagaur, Rajasthan. Jyoti Mirdha is married to Narendra Gehlaut-Vice Chairman Indiabulls Real Estate. Kesarbir, the youngest child in Sweta and Deepender, has started school.

Hooda and Geeta Grewal had been married before and divorced in 2005.

Political career

Hooda was elected to the Rajya Sabha in 2020 and was previously elected to the Lok Sabha from Rohtak for three terms. He was the Whip of Parliament during the 16th Lok Sabha session. He served on several other statutory and parliamentary bodies as an elected board member of the Council of Indian Institutes of Technology; as chairman of the Indo-UK forum of Parliamentarians; and as a member of Parliament's Standing Committee on Energy. He has served on Parliamentary Standing Committees of Finance, External Affairs, Agriculture, and Human Resource Development in the past.

Corporate career

Deepender had worked in various industries in India and the United States before being elected to the Lok Sabha in 2005 at the age of 27. He started his career with Reliance Industries Ltd (1999-2000) as a management trainee and then worked as a software engineer with Infosys Technologies Ltd (2000-2001) on Bengaluru's campus.

He took a break to finish his MBA at Kelley School of Business, Indiana University, where he concentrated on finance and strategy. He joined American Airlines/Sabre Holdings, Dallas, USA, as a senior manager from 2003-2005, after his MBA. He was offered a McKinsey & Company job and went to India to take a short break from work but then decided to shift to public service. In October, 2005, he contested and won the Lok Sabha by-election from Rohtak.
