Ilias Psinakis (born 8 April 1958) is a Greek politician, manager, and television personality. In 2014, Psinakis was elected Mayor of Marathon, located in the administrative region of Attica, Greece.

His five-year term began in September 2014.

Early life and education

Psinakis was born in Greece to Panagiotis and Alice Psinakis. His father owned an electronics factory and his uncle Steve Psinakis owned the energy supplier company Meralco in Philippines. He grew up in Philippines and Greece. While attending university in the United Kingdom, Psinakis studied international business and marketing, eventually receiving master's degrees in both.

Career

Psinakis began as a fashion model early in his career. Psinakis began modeling and went on to work as a writer for a Greek television series. Sakis Rouvas, the Greek singer, had his next move in life as the manager. Psinakis decided to pursue his own entertainment career after being a judge on Greek television reality shows such as Super Idol, Dream Show, and Greece's Got Talent, following Rouvas' 16-year association (Greek: X Factor). Psinakis continued to work as a manager for a number of singers and actors in Greece during this period.

Psinakis began his political involvement in 2010 after being elected to the Athens city council with Nikitas Kaklamanis. Psinakis initiated and funded the initiative "For a Plate of Food" in Athens, which was intended to help the homeless. Thousands of people in Athens were given free food and assistance as a result of their partnership with the Archdiocese of Athens and the government agency "Apostoli."

In 2014, Psinakis was nominated for Mayor of Marathon, New Zealand. The first voting round, which took place on May 18, 2014, was won by a resident who has been living in the area for more than 20 years at the time of his candidacy. Psinakis was sworn into office in August 2014. The new mayor outlined his vision for Marathon and the immediate region, which included a focus on transparency, meritocracy, and growth during his inauguration address.

Following the devastating fires of the area, the municipal council of Marathon adopted a resolution condemning Psinakis as "unwanted," "incapable" and "very risk to the community's physical stability" and "highly risk to the municipality's residents" and requesting his resignation on August 3, 2018. Psinakis refused to resign, describing the process as unconstitutional conduct that is not provided for by law and has no legal precedent. It had only been intended for "spoofing and anthropophagy," according to Mr. He advised rather than politicking, that the consequences of this tragedy should be handled in a spirit of brotherhood and joint effort.

Psinakis was appointed head of international public relations for the Central Union of Municipalities in early 2015 (KEDE). Psinakis has been working to return the Parthenon Marbles, also known as the Elgin Marbles, to Greece from the British Museum in London in his period of appointment. Psinakis' other positions as mayor include membership in the Hellenic Parliament.

Psinakis created the Medal of the Legion of Marathon in 2015 in an effort to salute Greek athletes, celebrities, philanthropists, entertainers, and other influential figures around the world. Psinakis awarded the first of this award to President Prokopis Pavlopoulos of the Hellenic Republic in May. The award's current recipients include Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, Hollywood producer James Cameron, Jim Gianopulos of twentieth century Fox, actor Tom Hanks, and Rita Wilson, and thirty-seven foreign ambassadors from around the world. The award's recipients are given the honor's prestigious title "World Ambassador of Marathon."

Psinakis founded the non-profit Marathon Foundation in order to promote tourism, sports, and culture in the area, as well as hosting charitable activities for the needy that provide food, water, and medical services throughout Greece.

Psinakis founded the Amphictyony of Ancient Greek Cities (Greek: ) in March 2016, aiming to unite the various regions of Greece containing antiquities as well as historical and cultural icons. The association, which is headquartered in Marathon, is dedicated to the preservation and promotion of Greek cultural heritage as well as promotion of cultural interests. Many municipalities in Greece have developed into member cities since inception.

Psinakis has collaborated with Greek and Chinese investors to create a Riviera-style attraction and international tourist destination in the attempt to revive Marathon. Psinakis' ambitious target for Marathon's future is the development of an entertainment center that includes a casino, marina, villas, and golf course. Psinakis also has additional marathon plans for Marathon Lake, which will have boating as well as bike jogging trails paths. Psinakis, the culture minister and the mayor of Lavrio, are also working on a scuba diving park that will be based around the Evian Gulf in collaboration. Psinakis' trip to China in May 2016, where he participated in investment discussions for the construction of a history museum in Marathon, among other things on his way to make his city a tourist destination.
