John Ensign Life

John Eric Ensign (born March 25, 1958) is an American veterinarian and former politician based in Las Vegas, Nevada.

A member of the Republican Party, Ensign was a Congressman and United States Senator from Nevada; he served in the latter seat from January 2001 until May 2011, when he resigned amid a Senate Ethics Committee investigation into his attempts to hide an extramarital affair.

Following his resignation from the Senate, Ensign returned to Nevada and resumed his career as a veterinarian.

Personal life

According to The New York Times, during college at Colorado State, Ensign became a born-again Christian. He and his wife, Darlene, were active in the Promise Keepers, an evangelical group. He and his wife have three children.

Ensign is a member of the Pentecostal International Church of the Foursquare Gospel. During his Senate tenure, he was the only Pentecostal in the Senate. While working in Washington, DC, he resided at the C Street Center, a religious house in the capital. Ensign moved out of the C Street house in November 2009, after disclosure of an extramarital affair and reports that he influenced others to keep quiet about it.

When in Las Vegas he attends a northwest Foursquare church. He is a member of the religious and political organization The Fellowship, described by evangelical Christians as one of the most politically well-connected fundamentalist organizations in the United States.

Between 2007 and 2008, Senator Ensign had an affair with Cynthia Hampton, who worked for a PAC supporting his campaigns. Her husband, Doug Hampton, was a close friend of Ensign and worked as a top administrative staffer in his Washington, DC office. Sen. Tom Coburn, with Timothy and David Coe, leaders of The Fellowship, attempted to intervene to end Ensign's affair in February 2008 by convincing Ensign to write a letter to Hampton's wife breaking off the affair. Ensign was chaperoned by Coburn and other members from C Street, where Ensign lived with Coburn, to a FedEx office to post the letter. Ensign called Hampton's wife hours later to tell her to ignore the letter and flew out to spend the weekend with her in Nevada.

The disclosure of the affair—together with Ensign's efforts to keep it quiet, including finding work for Doug Hampton as a lobbyist—resulted in investigations by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Federal Election Commission, and the Senate. The alleged misconduct included a $96,000 payment from Ensign's parents, which Doug Hampton claimed was an unreported severance payment; Hampton obtaining a job as a lobbyist at Ensign's behest; Ensign helping Hampton in his role as a lobbyist in violation of a one-year lobbying ban on ex-Senate staffers; and Hampton's additional charge that Ensign sexually harassed his wife.

On March 7, 2011, Ensign announced that he would not seek re-election to the Senate the following year because he wished to shield his family from the consequences of his past behavior. In late April 2011, Ensign announced that he would resign his position as Senator on May 3. In May 2011, the Senate Ethics Committee referred its report to the Department of Justice for investigation of possible violations of law. The Department of Justice found evidence of potential criminality but decided against prosecuting Ensign.

John Ensign Career

Veterinary careers, early life, education, and veterinary careers all began early in life.

Ensign was born in 1958 in Roseville, California, to Sharon Lee Cipriani (whose father was Italian) and a father whose surname was Mueller. When Ensign was four years old, Ensign's father left the family; Ensign then moved to Nevada, Cipriani. Cipriani later married Michael S. Ensign, a game industry executive, who had an early John who was deemed his "real father." The senior Ensign became chairman of Mandalay Resort Group's board of directors later.

John Ensign was a student at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, and was a member of Sigma Chi fraternity. In 1981, he graduated from Oregon State University with a Bachelor of Science degree. He earned his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from Colorado State University in 1985 and began practicing veterinary medicine shortly after. Ensign was a successful businessman who opened a 24-hour animal hospital in Las Vegas. Before entering politics, he owned two animal hospitals.

Ensign often referred to his ancestry in political campaigns, noting that he is one-eighth (1/8) Filipino. Ensign had never met his Filipino-born paternal grandfather, who is of Filipino-German descent, as of 2008. Ensign Ensign was unaware of his grandfather's ancestry until about 1994. In 1997, Filipino dignitaries awarded the Order of the Knights of Rizal to the senator.

Ensign and his family returned to Las Vegas after resigning from the Senate in 2011. Ensign revived his career as a surgeon and opened Boca Park Animal Hospital.

Political career

Ensign received the Republican nomination for Nevada's 1st congressional district, based in Las Vegas in 1994. For the majority of the campaign, he was trailed by a wide margin. However, Ensign gained a lot of traction after reports that a Bilbray aide was able to profit from Bilbray's land legislation. Ensign received 1,400 votes and was reelected by seven points in 1996, though Democratic presidential candidate Bill Clinton carried the district by a wide margin this year.

Ensign ran for the Senate in 1998 but was defeated by Democratic incumbent Harry Reid by 428 votes.

Ensign secured a Senate seat in 2000 after defeating Democratic adversary Ed Bernstein by a 55%-40% margin to replace the retiring Democratic incumbent, Richard H. Bryan. Ensign was reelected in 2006 and overthrowade businessman Jack Carter.

Despite the fact that Ensign and Reid had a rocky 1998 rivalry, they maintained a good rapport. They used to work together on Nevada problems.

Ensign was planning a presidential run in 2012 on June 1st in his career, sparking rumors that he was considering a presidential bid. His presidential aspirations were put in jeopardy after the revelation of his extramarital affair and cover-up in mid-June of this year. Ensign resigned as chair of the Senate Republican Policy Committee on June 17, 2009, following the investigation by the Senate Ethics Committee. Even though Ensign's polling numbers had recently decreased, he announced on July 14, 2009 that he intends to re-elect his Nevada Senate seat in 2012.

Ensign played Reid during one day of her debate preparations at the Trump Plaza in Las Vegas on October 14, 2010. In November 2010, the Las Vegas Sun predicted that this could damage Reid's relationship, who may "man up" and oppose Ensign's re-election. Ensign had multiple "hurdles" to re-elect, according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal in November 2010.

Ensign was elected chairman of the National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC). Ensign, the NRSC's chairman, was charged with assembling a team to reclaim the Senate for Republicans in the 2008 election. The Ensign has hired Mike Slanker and Lindsey Slanker of Nevada-based political consulting company November Inc. to be the Political Director and Finance Director of the NRSC. Democrats gained 8 seats in the 2008 election, and the Democrats secured a filibuster-proof majority in the Senate following Arlen Specter's demise in 2009.

Ensign had used the ruse of silence in September 2007 to prevent a bill requiring senators to submit fund-raising reports electronically from being voted on. He requested that they first vote on his bill to tighten disclosure laws. (The "undercover hold" is a parliamentary procedure that allows one or two senators to block a motion from reaching a vote on the Senate floor. Ensign insisted that, before a vote on the disclosure bill could be called, the committee would first vote on a bill that "would force organizations petitioning the Senate Ethics Committee to disclose the identities of donors giving more than $5,000," the bill's sponsor, who was sued by watchdog organizations.

In the November general election, Ensign defeated Democrat Jack Carter, the son of former President Jimmy Carter. Both he and Carter defeated token opposition in the primaries on August 15, 2006. Ensign defeated Carter in the general election on November 7, 2006, 55.3 percent to 40.99%.

Ensign said on March 7, 2011, that he did not run for re-election in 2012 because he wanted to keep his family safe from an "exceptionally ugly" campaign. At a news conference in Las Vegas, Ensign told reporters, "I have to put my family first." National Republicans praised the news, saying he would not have won a primary election had been held. Ensign's conduct was investigated by the Senate Ethics Committee for 22 months. Ensign resigned from office on April 21, 2011, despite releasing their report, and they resigned on May 3. He said he did not want to subject my family, my constituents, or the Senate to any further rounds of inquiry, depositions, long-running hearings, or even public hearings." The Committee submitted its report to the Department of Justice for an investigation into suspected serious breaches of law.

Ensign was the first Senator from Nevada to resign, other than Alan Bible, who resigned seventeen days before his term to give his successor a leg up on seniority.

The National Right to Life Committee and NARAL Pro-Choice America have confirmed his anti-abortion voting results. Ensign introduced the Child Custody Protection Act in 2003, which prohibits minors from crossing state lines to circumvent regulations in certain states that have mandated parents to participate in abortion decisions made by minors.

Ensign was named as one of Congress' most important allies. Senator Maria Cantwell (D-WA), Arlen Specter (D-PA), and Dianne Feinstein (D-CA), among Senators Maria Cantwell (D-WA), Senator Ensign (D-CA), and Senator Ensign (D-CA), as a lead sponsor of the Animal Combat Prohibition Enforcement Act, which was ruled unlawfully prohibiting the movement of animals across state lines for the purpose of combating. According to a press release from Ensign's office, "fifty states now have laws against dogfighting, while forty-nine have rules against cockfighting." This bill supplements these state laws.

Senator Ensign served as a member of the Congressional Cuba Democracy Caucus.

Ensign voted in favour of the Don't Ask, Don't Tell Repeal Act of 2010, which would allow gay and lesbian individuals to serve openly in the armed forces.

Ensign had been a leading advocate in opposition to the Kelo vs. New London Supreme Court decision, and had introduced a bill that would minimize the consequences of the decision. The Court in Kelo found that local governments would use the eminent domain not only for public use but also for any project that requires a public interest. The Court ordered a homeowner to sell her house for new construction, which was specifically permitted by the City of New London, Connecticut. A backlash was generated after it was found that eminent domain could be used to issue a condemnation order on a private property for a private cause.

Ensign's lifetime rating, according to conservative fiscal watchdog group Citizens Against Government Waste, was the fourth highest senator after Jim DeMint, Tom Coburn, and Jon Kyl—as of 2007.

Ensign introduced legislation on the Accountability and Review of Federal Agencies in 2005. The commission would compile a list of what its members consider unnecessary, outdated, wasteful, or duplicative discretionary services, and would lobby Congress to eliminate all programs on the list. The plan was similar to the one used by Congress for Base Realignment and Closure to assess military bases. It was not overruled.

Ensign voted against President Barack Obama's health-care reform bill in December 2009, and he voted against the Health Care and Education Reconciliation Act of 2010.

Ensign resigns in 1998 after President Bill Clinton confessed to sexual assault with Monica Lewinsky. "He has no credibility left," Ensign Leo Ensign said.

Ensign testified on the Senate floor in support of the proposed Federal Marriage Act, which would have barred states from acknowledging same-sex marriages.

Ensign said:

Ensign passed legislation in 2011 that would have mandated all low-security prisoners to work 50 hours per week.

Ensign voted against a bill that expanded federal protection to Filipino veterans in the Philippines, which was later a Commonwealth victory against Japan in World War II. He believes that veterans in the United States should be eligible for discounts. The bill was approved in Congress.

Ensign voted in favor of authorizing the President to use the United States Armed Forces to "deter and prevent acts of international terrorism against the United States." This is the authorizing legislation for the invasion of Afghanistan and the deposing of the Taliban.

In order to "defend the national security of the United States against the continuing threat posed by Iraq," Ensign voted in favour of using the United States Armed Forces "as he determines to be necessary and appropriate" in order to "defend the national defense of the US against the continuing threat posed by Iraq; and monitor all relevant UN Security Council Resolutions concerning Iraq. In 2007, Ensign promoted Iraq's counterinsurgency policy and opposed withdrawing troops from Iraq in 2007 and 2008.
